25-year-old mom of two shot to death while holding her 4-year-old child in her arms

WXII YOUR 12 NEWS AT SIX STARTS RIGHT NOW. WE’RE HEARING FROM THE FAMILY OF A WOMAN SHOT AND KILLED YESTERDAY IN GREENSBORO. THE MAN ACCUSED OF SHOOTING HER IS ALSO ACCUSED OF TAKING HIS SON, PROMPTING AN AMBER ALERT THAT LASTED MORE THAN 12 HOURS. GREENSBORO POLICE SAY DEON MONK WAS ARRESTED IN HARNETT COUNTY THIS MORNING. HIS NINE MONTH OLD SON WAS FOUND IN SILER CITY AND HAS BEEN SAFELY RETURNED TO HIS MOTHER. ACCORDING TO POLICE, BEFORE MONK TOOK HIS CHILD, HE SHOT TWO PEOPLE AT A HOME ON PHILLIPS AVENUE, 25 YEAR OLD CHERYL JOHNSON DIED. WXII 12 MARIA DEBONE SPOKE WITH JOHNSON’S FAMILY THIS MORNING. AND MARIA, THEY SAY SHE WAS JUST AN INNOCENT BYSTANDER IN ALL OF THIS. YEAH, THAT’S RIGHT. CHERYL JOHNSON’S FAMILY SAID SHE WAS JUST SITTING ON HER BED HOLDING HER FOUR YEAR OLD CHILD IN HER ARMS WHEN SHE WAS SHOT AND KILLED. THEY SAID THIS NEVER SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED TO HER. WE DON’T DO NOTHING. WE STAY IN THE HOUSE. I HEARD SHE’S SITTING IN THE HOUSE IN STILL BE IN DANGER. MAKES NO SENSE. FAMILY OF 25 YEAR OLD CHERYL JOHNSON SAID THEIR LITTLE SISTER, A MOTHER, A FOUR YEAR OLD TWINS, WAS INNOCENT IN THIS AND DIDN’T EVEN KNOW THE SUSPECT. NOW CHARGED WITH FIRST DEGREE MURDER. IT FEELS SURREAL KNOWING THAT I CAN’T GO HOME AND HER BEING THERE. IT HURTS MORE THAT SHE HAD LITERALLY NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS SITUATION. CHERYL’S TWIN BROTHER, LAVELLE, SAID THEY MOVED TO GREENSBORO TO ESCAPE GUN VIOLENCE. WHERE WE FROM, WE SHOOTING AND EVERYDAY OCCURRENCE. SO IT WAS WE MOVED DOWN HERE TO GET AWAY FROM THAT. GET AWAY FROM THE VIOLENCE, GET AWAY FROM THE GANGS, GET AWAY FROM THE STUPIDITY TO COME DOWN HERE AND BECOME VICTIMS OF STUPIDITY. HE AND THE MANY FAMILY MEMBERS THAT LOVED CHERYL JUST WANT JUSTICE. AND FOR GUN VIOLENCE TO STOP. NO MATTER HOW SORRY HE IS, JUSTICE NEEDS TO BE SERVED FOR CHERYL. IT NEEDS TO BE SERVED BECAUSE THE PURPOSE OF GUNS IS FOR PROTECTION, NOT TO JUST GO OUT AND JUST SHOOT AND KILL. THIS HAS TO STOP AND IT HAS TO STOP SOMEWHERE. It hurts more that she literally had nothing to do with the situation,” Levelle Johnson said. “She is literally half of me,” he said. He said it will take time for his family to cope with her loss. “My daughter is talking about her aunt being gone. Her aunt being shot because she witnessed the entire thing,” Johnson said. He said she was a wonderful mother who would do anything for her two children. “She would have give her life for them kids. It was nothing you can tell her. She would have done whatever she could for her kids. She was trying to go back fo school, she was trying to do what she could for them kids,” Johnson said. The family has set up a GoFundMe to help with funeral expenses.
