WSFCS parents frustrated with bus transportation issues
Several parents of Winston-Salem Forsyth County school students reached out to 12 Investigates with bus transportation issues.
Parents WXII spoke with say their child's bus is either too early, late, or doesn't come. They said it’s not happening every day but happening enough that it’s a problem for them.
Michael Freitas, a parent of a WSFCS student said recently their child's bus didn't come Friday, March 17 and Wednesday, March 22.
"With me working active in my new job and my better half also working full time, there was no vehicle at home, and no way for her to get to school," Freitas said.
Freitas said it's not just him in his neighborhood that has seen these issues.
"It's not just mine. There are other kids and I had posted on NextDoor and other parents had responded with similar or other issues they've had with the buses in general, in the county," Freitas said.
Shaquira Ramseur, another parent of a WSFCS student said if the bus doesn't come, she has no way of getting her child to school.
“My child has missed numerous days because of the bus issue," Ramseur said. "My son loves school. So it's kind of heartbreaking having to tell him like we can't, you know, go today, and he's like, well, I know, it's not your fault, but I wish the bus will get it together, you know."
The other issue parents say is the bus tracking app and said that it doesn't always work.
“Yesterday, it wasn't showing up on the tracker so I called transportation and they said, oh, it's in Lewisville, it's going to be 30 to 40 minutes late," Candi Cranfill-Poe, a parent of a WSFCS student said.
Ramseur said she relies on the app saying, "That to me is like my holy grail, that is the Bible. I live by that."
Ramseur said she's reached out to transportation.
"Told me numerous times like, well, if the bus can't be tracked, you just kind of got to wait out there and for me, that becomes a safety issue, because my child is young. I don't allow my child to walk to the bus stop by themselves, so he can't stand out there," Ramseur said.
Cranfill-Poe showed WXII 12 Reporter Maria DeBone the app.
"As of 1:05 in the afternoon, if I were only relying on this app, I would have to assume that my child was still at the bus stop from 7:13 this morning," Cranfill-Poe said.
These parents said that they’ve contacted transportation and were told the issues are due to a bus driver shortage and the bus drivers they do have, running multiple routes.
“I think it's time for the school district to seriously consider what it's going to take to fill these bus driver roles and to ensure that these kids get to school," Freitas said.
Ramseur said, “Now we're getting to a point where I don't even know if he's gonna continue there next year, if this is going to be an ongoing issue with the bus.
WXII reached out to the spokesperson for the district who said more than 30,000 kids ride buses, and there is a driver shortage, so there will be delays and schedule changes. He also said substitute buses aren’t on the app, which is why parents can’t always track the routes.
In regards to the bus driver shortage, the spokesperson said they're working to hire more people by having hiring fairs and just announced a new executive director of transportation starting next month.
The spokesperson also said they're looking into these specific instances.
