Grandfather Mountain to host a solar eclipse viewing event April 8
A solar eclipse will be coming to North America. If weather permits, Grandfather mountain will host a viewing event for the partial solar eclipse.

According to a news release from the Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation, approximately 87% of the sun will be obscured by the moon in this area on April 8. The best viewing time is expected to be between 2 and 3 p.m.

In celebration of the unique occurrence, all Daily Programs provided at the park with the exception of Keeper Talks, will have ties to solar and lunar eclipses on April 8. The programming will take place between 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and is included in park admission.
“We’re excited to mark such a rare phenomenon while connecting it to our programming,” said John Caveny, director of conservation and education for the Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation. “We anticipate the event to be a great educational experience that aligns with our mission to share the wonders of the natural world.”

In addition to themed programs, there will be a designated area set up to view the eclipse. The location will be determined on the day of the vent to take wind and other factors into consideration. The park said small foldable chairs are welcome at this location but are not allowed on Linville Peak.

In order to safely view the solar eclipse, special sunglasses are needed. The first 100 guests on April 8 will receive a complimentary pair of solar eclipse glasses with their admission. The glasses will also be on sale in the Wilson Center for Nature Discovery's gift shop and the Top Shop on the days leading up to the event and the day of.

It is also recommended to bring sunscreen, a hat and protective clothing for guests who plan to be in the sun for an extended period of time.
