WILSON DIED YESTERDAY, ACCORDING TO THE SCHOOL IN WINSTON-SALEM. HE WAS 101 YEARS OLD. WILSON AFFECTIONATELY NAMED MR. WAKE FOREST, JOINED THE FACULTY IN 1951. The Wake Forest University community is mourning a well-known member who died. Wake Forest University said Edwin G. Wilson, who was affectionately known as “Mr. Wake Forest,” died at the age of 101 years old. They said he died on Wednesday. He was a professor of English and provost emeritus. He served as the university’s first provost from 1967 until 1990. Wente said in a Wake Forest University campus news story. He was deeply loved by the faculty, students and his family. “To be here on this day is to tell me again how much I love Wake Forest. To be at Wake Forest is to be at a place that I could love no more and to be with people whom I could love no more,” Wilson said while speaking at an alumni luncheon on March 25, 2022. The Wilson family is planning a memorial service for him in May, which will be open to the public. “A man of extraordinary character, grace, and wisdom, Ed Wilson has been a beloved and influential figure at Wake Forest for many decades both as a professor and an administrator,” Wake Forest president Susan R. Wente said in a Wake Forest University campus news story.
