KILLED IN HIS OFFICE AS THE ORANGE COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY SAYS HE IS CONCERNED ABOUT ACCESS TO FIREARMS FOR PEOPLE WITH MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES. JEFF NEIMAN IS TRYING THE MAN ACCUSED IN THE SHOOTING AT UNK CHAPEL HILL AND A JUDGE RECENTLY FOUND TY CHI MENTALLY UNFIT TO STAND TRIAL AND HE’S CURRENTLY RECEIVING TREATMENT AT A STATE FACILITY. SHE’S ACCUSED OF KILLING. YEN IN AUGUST. DA NEIMAN COULDN’T TALK ABOUT SPECIFICS SURROUNDING CHI OR THIS CASE, BUT HE SAYS QUESTIONS SURROUNDING HOW HE WAS BELIEVED TO BE ABLE TO GET A GUN ARE RELEVANT. NEIMAN SAYS DESPITE GUN BUYERS HAVING TO FILL OUT A GUN PURCHASE FORM, THERE’S A LACK OF UNIVERSAL BACKGROUND CHECKS. IN ANY CRIME INVESTIGATION OR CASE INVOLVING A FIREARM. HOW THE DEFENDANT ACQUIRED THE FIREARM IS AN ELEMENT OF THE CASE. IN OTHER WORDS, SOMEONE COULD BE MENTLLY CAPABLE OF COMMITTING THE CRIME, HAVE THE REQUISITE MENTAL INTENT TO COMMIT THE CRIME, BUT THEN AT A LATER TIME, WHEN THEY COME TO COURT, NOT BE MENTALLY FIT FOR TRIAL, AND THE REVERSE COULD BE TRUE. THIS WEEK, UNC CHAPEL HILL RELEASED THE RESULTS FROM A RECENT SURVEY ABOUT THE RESPONSE TO THIS INCIDENT. AND THOSE WHO RESPONDED SAY THERE NEEDS TO BE BETTER COMMUNICATION AND EMERGENCY PROTOCOL TRAINING AND DRILLS FOR FACULTY AND STAFF. TAKING A LOOK AT THE FORECAST NOW, WE HAVE THOSE PRETTY BLUE SKIES WITH SUNSHINE AS WE TAKE A LIVE LOOK OVER WINSTON-SALEM. METEOROLOGIST MICHELLE KENNEDY JOINING US NOW. HOW IS THE REST OF THE DAY LOOKING, MICHELLE? I KNOW IT’S PROBABLY GOING TO GET COLDER ONCE AGAIN TONIGHT. YEAH, WE ARE TALKING ABOUT SOME CHILLY ALMOST WINTER LIKE TEMPERATURES, RIGHT? IT’S NOT QUITE OFFICIAL YET. WE’RE GETTING CLOSER TO IT, THOUGH, BUT WE ARE LOOKING AT THOSE COOL CONDITIONS FOR YOU RIGHT NOW. WE DROPPED DOWN THIS MORNING TO 27 DEGREES IN GREENSBORO, 30 DEGREES IN WINSTON-SALEM, ALL THE WAY DOWN TO 27 AND MARTINSVILLE. WE HAVE THOSE TEMPERATURES BELOW FREEZING, TOO, AS WE WENT UP INTO THE BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY REGION. TEMPERATURES RIGHT NOW HAVE REBOUNDED. WE’RE AT 50 DEGREES AND A FEW SPOTS OR I JUST SAW THAT RIGHT THERE IN DANVILLE. THERE YOU GO. THAT’S OUR WARM SPOT RIGHT NOW. 46 DEGREES IN HIGH POINT, 47 IN WINSTON-SALEM, AS WELL AS GREENSBORO. AND WE DO HAVE SOME WINDS STILL WITH US. NOW, OUR SUSTAINED WINDS ARE ANYWHERE FROM 3 TO 5 MILES AN HOUR, AND THEY’VE CONTINUED TO COME UP FOR US AS WELL IN A FEW AREAS. SO WE’RE NOTICING THAT THE SUSTAINED WINDS ARE COMING UP 5 TO 10. AND THEN ON TOP OF THAT, WE STILL HAVE SOME GUSTS, ESPECIALLY IN THE TRIAD LOCATIONS WHERE WE COULD SEE SOME 15 TO 20 MILES AN HOUR THROUGH THE AFTERNOON. TEMPERATURES TODAY, THOUGH, ARE GOING TO BE IN THE LOW 50S. SO FEELING A LITTLE BIT BETTER. WE HAVE THE SUNSHINE AT LEAST. WE’LL TALK MORE ABOUT IT AND WHERE WE’RE HEADING FOR TOMORROW MORNING. COMING UP. HAPPENING NOW IN PILOT MOUNTAIN, POLICE ARE SEARCHING FOR A SUSPECT WHO ROBBED A BANK. INVESTIGATORS SAY THE SUSPECT HELD UP THE TRUIST BANK BRANCH YESTERDAY ON EAST MAIN STREET. NO WORD ON HOW MUCH MONEY WAS TAKEN, BUT WE’RE TOLD NOBODY WAS HURT. POLICE TELL US STATE AND FEDERAL INVESTIGATORS ARE WORKING WITH THEM TO IDENTIFY THE SUSPECT. THE WIFE OF A MAN KILLED AT A MOUNT AIRY GAS STATION IS REMEMBERING HIM AS A HAPPY, LOVING HUSBAND WHO LOVED FARM ANIMALS. POLICE SAY 39 YEAR OLD AUGUSTIN LUNA WAS SOT IN THE HEAD BY AUSTIN HAWKS. HAWKS IS NOW IN JAIL, CHARGED WITH MURDER. THE SHOOTING HAPPENED AT THE MARATHON GAS STATION ON EAST PINE STREET NEXT TO RIVERSIDE PARK. OFFICERS SAY LUNA WAS DEAD BY THE TIME THEY ARRIVED ON SCENE. NO WORD FROM INVESTIGATORS ON WHAT LED UP TO THAT SHOOTING. THIS AFTERNOON, FORSYTH COUNTY COMMISSIONERS WILL VOTE ON A RESOLUTION TO FIX MORE THAN 700 LOCKS AT THE FORSYTH COUNTY JAIL. SHERIFF BOBBY KIMBRO SAYS A NEW LOCKING SYSTEM WILL HELP KEEP INMATES IN THEIR CELLS. AS 12 INVESTIGATES PREVIOUSLY REPORTED, THE CURRENT LOCKS ARE EASY TO POP OFF, PUTTING BOTH JAIL STAFF AND INMATES AT RISK. TODAY’S COMMISSIONERS MEETING IS AT 2:00 IN COMMITMENT 2024, THE FOURTH AND LAST SCHEDULED DEBATE FOR THE REPUBLICAN PRIMARY CANDIDATES WAS LAST NIGHT IN ALABAMA. AND ONCE AGAIN, FRONT RUNNER DONALD TRUMP WAS NOT THERE, BUT FOUR OTHER CANDIDATES DID FACE OFF AS GARRETT HAKE REPORTS, TRUMP STILL CASTS A LARGE SHADOW ON THE STAGE. OVERNIGHT, THE FOURTH REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE DEVOLVING INTO A FOUR WAY BRAWL WITH NIKKI HALEY AND THE ABSENT DONALD TRUMP TAKING MOST OF THE PUNCHES. CHRIS CHRISTIE CALLING OUT HIS FELLOW CANDIDATES FOR IGNORING THEIR PARTY’S DOMINANT FRONTRUNNER. HE’S THE ONE WHO, AS YOU JUST PUT IT, IS WAY AHEAD IN THE POLLS. AND YET I’VE GOT THESE THREE GUYS WHO ARE ALL SEEMINGLY TO COMPETE WITH, YOU KNOW, VOLDEMORT. HE WHO SHALL NOT BE NAMED. THEY DON’T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT. CHRISTIE ALSO ASKED ABOUT THIS TRUMP COMMENT. HE SAYS YOU’RE NOT GOING TO BE A DICTATOR, ARE YOU? I SAID, NO, NO, NO. OTHER THAN DAY ONE, THIS IS AN ANGRY, BITTER MAN WHO NOW WANTS TO BE BACK AS PRESIDENT BECAUSE HE WANTS TO EXACT RETRIBUTION ON ANYONE WHO HAS DISAGREED WITH HIM. DO I THINK HE WAS KIDDING WHEN HE SAID HE WAS A DICTATOR? ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS LOOK AT THE HISTORY. BUT WITH MR. TRUMP FUNDRAISING IN FLORIDA OVERNIGHT AND REFUSING TO TAKE PART IN A SINGLE DEBATE, IT’S BEEN NIKKI HALEY, WHO’S SEEN A RISE IN BOTH MOMENTUM AND MONEY IN TERMS OF THESE DONORS THAT ARE SUPPORTING ME, THEY’RE JUST JEALOUS. THEY WISH THAT THEY WERE SUPPORTING THEM. HALEY FENDING OFF INCREASINGLY PERSONAL ATTACKS FROM RON DESANTIS AND VIVEK RAMASWAMY NIKKI WILL CAVE TO THOSE BIG DONORS WHEN IT COUNTS. THE ONLY PERSON MORE FASCIST THAN THE BIDEN REGIME NOW IS NIKKI HALEY. I LOVE ALL THE ATTENTION, FELLAS. THANK YOU FOR THAT. HALEY LATER BRUSHING OFF RAMASWAMI WHEN HE CALLED HER CORRUPT. WOULD YOU LIKE TO RESPOND? NO. IT’S NOT WORTH MY TIME TO RESPOND TO HIM WITH THE FRONTRUNNER. ABSENT THE NIGHT OFTEN MARKED BY PERSONAL ATTACKS AS CHRIS, YOUR VERSION OF FOREIGN POLICY EXPERIENCE WAS CLOSING A BRIDGE FROM NEW JERSEY TO NEW YORK. SO DO EVERYBODY A FAVOR JUST WALK YOURSELF OFF THAT STAGE, ENJOY A NICE MEAL AND GET THE HELL OUT OF THIS WAY. CHRISTIE ALSO MOCKING DESANTIS FOR REFUSING TO DIRECTLY ANSWER A QUESTION ABOUT MR. TRUMP’S FITNESS FOR OFFICE. RON DESANTIS WAS, IS HE? WE HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO DO SOMEBODY WHO IS IN THE PRIME OF THEIR LIFE. AND THIS MARKS THE LAST DEBATE BEFORE THE IOWA CAUCUS ON JANUARY 15TH. THAT’S WHEN VOTERS WILL HAVE THEIR FIRST CRACK AT SETTING THE TONE FOR THE 2024 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, THE REPUBLICAN PRIMARY FOR NORTH CAROLINA GOVERNOR IS GETTING TIGHTER AS THE RACE SHAPES UP. THAT’S ACCORDING TO A NEW POLL FROM EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY. THE SURVEY OF GOP PRIMARY VOTERS FOUND LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR MARK ROBINSON IS STILL THE FAVORITE, WITH 34% SUPPORT. BUT THAT’S LESS THAN OTHER POLLS THAT FOUND HIM WITH MORE THAN 40% SUPPORT. BILL GRAHAM COMES IN SECOND, FOLLOWED BY DALE FOLWELL AND ANDY WELLS. HOWEVER, 49% OF GOP VOTERS SAY THEY’RE STILL UNDECIDED. IF NO CANDIDATE WINS, MORE THAN 30% OF THE TOTAL VOTE IN A CROWDED PRIMARY, IT GOES TO A RUNOFF BETWEEN ONLY THE TOP TWO FINISHERS. THE WINNER OF THE REPUBLICAN PRIMARY FOR GOVERNOR WILL LIKELY FACE ONE OF THREE DEMOCRATS, SHERROD BOOKER, MIKE MORGAN OR JOSH STEIN KNOW NEW AT NOON, NORTH CAROLINA’S GETTING NEARLY $8 MILLION FROM E-CIGARETTE MAKER JUUL LABS. THE COMPANY HAS BEEN ACCUSED OF CONTRIBUTING TO THE RISE OF VAPING AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE. ATTORNEY GENERAL JOSH STEIN SAYS THE MONEY COMES FROM A SETTLEMENT REACHED EARLIER THIS YEAR. WE ARE TOLD THE MONEY WILL BE USED BY THE STATE HEALTH DEPARTMENT FOR E-CIGARETTE RESEARCH AND PROGRAMS TO PREVENT VAPING ADDICTION. IN TOTAL, NORTH CAROLINA WILL RECEIVE MORE THAN $47 MILLION FROM JEWELL. NEW AT NOON SWAIN MIDDLE SCHOOL IN GREENSBORO IS SHOWING ITS SUPPORT FOR TWO STAFF MEMBERS WHO ARE BATTLING BREAST CANCER. KIM COOPER LEFT HER TEACHING JOB AFTER BEING DIAGNOSED, BUT RECENTLY RETURNED AS A TUTOR WHILE SHE CONTINUES TREATMENT. SCHOOL COUNSELOR SHANI KELLY WAS ALSO DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER AND IS BEGINNING MEDICAL LEAVE TOMORROW. A PARENT HEARD ABOUT THEIR MEDICAL ISSUES AND DESIGNED TWO SPECIAL HOODIES TO SUPPORT THEM. AND THIS MORNING THEY GOT THEM A SURPRISING STAFF MEETING. I LOVE WORKING AT SWAIN. I LOVE THE STUDENTS. I LOVE MY COWORKERS HOURS. AND SO THAT WAS THE HARDEST PART, BEING AWAY FROM THEM. BUT THEY CHECKED IN, THEY CALLED, THEY TEXT, THEY MADE SURE, YOU KNOW, ANYTHING I NEEDED. THEY WERE THERE. SO WE ARE A BIG FAMILY.
