A Winter Weather Advisory remains for a portion of the North Carolina and Virginia mountains through 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, including Ashe and Watauga Counties in North Carolina, as well as Grayson County, Virginia.
Strong winds carried moisture into the mountains, creating widespread snow showers in southwest Virginia and western North Carolina. The intensity is already dropping Wednesday afternoon, but winds will remain brisk through early evening.

Snow has accumulated on the grass and ground, as well as colder surfaces like rooftops. A few snow showers may linger, before tapering off completely later in the day. Most have dried out considerably since Wednesday morning. Roads that remain wet into tonight may become icy and temperatures fall into the 20s. As a result, prepare for the possibility of event cancellations late Wednesday and another round of mountain county school delays and closings on Thursday morning.

Snowfall accumulation has been limited to less than an inch in most communities. Higher peaks with slopes facing the northwest can expect more snow, including a few totals as high as two to three inches.
Winds will gust as high as 30-40 mph through through Wednesday afternoon. The wind chill temperature is stay in the twenties for most of the day, and may fall as low as the upper teens.

The mountain weather will remain blustery and cold tonight, but Thursday sunshine will help improve temperatures and any poor travel conditions that develop.
