High Point's National Night Out builds bonds between law enforcement and the community
WXII BUILDING BONDS BETWEEN CITY OFFICIALS AND THE PEOPLE THEY SERVE. THAT’S WHAT’S TAKING PLACE HERE IN THE TRIAD AND ALL ACROSS THE COUNTRY TONIGHT. IT’S FOR NATIONAL NIGHT OUT. IT TAKES PLACE THE FIRST TUESDAY IN AUGUST. WXII 12. JOSHUA DAVIS JOINS US FROM CONRAD MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH IN HIGH POINT, WHERE ONE CELEBRATION JUST GOT UNDERWAY. JOSHUA. KNOW THERE ARE NEARLY A DOZEN NATIONAL NIGHT OUT EVENTS HAPPENING IN HIGH POINT, INCLUDING HERE AT CONRAD MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH. BUT ALL OF THEM HAVE THE SAME GOAL TO BUILD TRUST BETWEEN COMMUNITIES AND LAW ENFORCEMENT. WE’RE ABLE TO INTERACT ON A DIFFERENT LEVEL, AND I MEAN THAT ON A PERSONAL LEVEL. JUST REALLY GET TO KNOW FOLKS. THE HIGH POINT POLICE DEPARTMENT IS JUST ONE OF MANY LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES TAKING PART IN NATIONAL NIGHT OUT EVENTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY, A DAY THAT SEES OFFICERS TAKE PART IN COMMUNITY EVENTS. IT’S A DAY THAT MATT TROUET OF THE HIGH POINT POLICE DEPARTMENT SAYS IS IMPORTANT IN BUILDING UP AND REINFORCING RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN OFFICERS AND THE COMMUNITIES THEY SERVE. WELL, WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO IT, WHEN YOU STRIP THINGS LIKE THESE BADGES AND GUNS AND THINGS THAT WE CARRY AROUND, THERE’S PEOPLE BEHIND THOSE BADGES AND GUNS. AND THAT’S WHAT WE THAT’S WHAT OUR GOAL IS, IS FOR THE PEOPLE HERE TO UNDERSTAND THAT WE’RE HUMAN JUST THE WAY THEY ARE. TROUET SAYS STRONG COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS LEAD TO SAFER COMMUNITIES, A SENTIMENT HE SHARES WITH REVEREND MARCUS CAMPBELL OF CONRAD MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH. IT’S GOOD FOR OUR COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO GET TO KNOW OUR LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS. AND AND THEY KNOW THAT THEY CAN TRUST THEM. YOU KNOW, THEY KNOW THAT THEY CAN CALL THEM AND THEY KNOW THAT THEY CARE. AND CAMPBELL SAYS LAW ENFORCEMENT SERVES A VITAL ROLE IN KEEPING COMMUNITIES SAFE. AND HE SAYS IT’S IMPORTANT TO BE THERE FOR OFFICERS AS MUCH AS THEY’RE THERE FOR THE COMMUNITY. The High Point Police Department is just one of many law enforcement agencies taking part in National Night Out events across the country, a day that sees officers take part in community events. It’s a day that Truitt says is important in building up and reinforcing relationships between officers and the communities they serve. "When it comes down to it, when you strip things like these badges and guns and things that we carry around, there's people behind those badges and guns," he said. "That's what our goal is, for the people here to understand that we're human just the way they are." Truitt says strong community relationships lead to safer communities, a sentiment shared with Reverend Marcus Campbell of Conrad Memorial Baptist Church, where one of the events is being held. "It's good for our community members to get to know our law enforcement officers," he said. "They know that they can trust them, they know that they can call on and they know that they care." Campbell says law enforcement serves a vital role in keeping communities safe, and he says it’s important to be there for officers, as much as they’re there for the community. "This is the meeting point," he said. "This is where they can sit down and share a meal. It's great."
