Lanie Pope

Chief Meteorologist

Lanie Pope, a native of Greenville, South Carolina, joined the WXII 12 team as Chief Meteorologist in September 2001.

Lanie is a graduate of the University of South Carolina, where she majored in broadcast journalism. She obtained her broadcast meteorology degree from Mississippi State University. She earned a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist seal from the American Meteorological Society and broadcast certification from the National Weather Association.

Lanie started her career at WPDE in Florence, South Carolina, and then went to work at WCNC (Charlotte), WLKY (Louisville, Kentucky) and WSOC (Charlotte).

Throughout her career, Lanie has been honored with multiple awards, including two regional Emmy Awards for her coverage of the 2018 Greensboro tornado and of Hurricane Bonnie in 1999. She has three North Carolina Associated Press awards for tornado coverage for 1998, 1999 and 2000, and an award from Radio Television Digital News Association for her coverage of Hurricane Floyd. In April 2017, the city of Winston-Salem honored Lanie as one of its’ Outstanding Women Leaders.

Lanie serves the community in many ways including volunteering her time with Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina and greeNest. She also works with Samaritan Ministries, where she serves in the soup kitchen and as the honorary chair for the annual Penny Campaign fundraiser.

Lanie serves on the board for Moji Coffee and More, which helps individuals with developmental disabilities obtain jobs in the community. She is also passionate about ending Alzheimer's disease, after losing her 66-year-old mom to the illness, by serving on the board for the Alzheimer's Association of Western North Carolina. Lanie often speaks publicly about her experience to families who are also affected by the disease, and hopes she can be a part of the solution and cure. Lanie also loves to teach children about weather.

Lanie, and her husband, Brian, have two sons, Kenan and Heath. She enjoys spending time outdoors with her family through hiking, camping, bicycling and playing sports. They also love watching sports and attending sporting events. Lanie cheers for the Washington Nationals, Arsenal FC and the Los Angeles Rams. At home, LEGOs are a favorite pastime.

A lover of all types of music, Lanie has taken up the rightguitar and ukulele. "Dance time" is one of her many ways to relax by cranking up the music, moving and singing along. She also enjoys reading and baking. Her favorite food is anything chocolate, especially her mother's entrusted fudge recipe. For exercise, she enjoys running, swimming, golf and mostly anything outdoors. Breathing the fresh air and taking in the sights and sounds of nature keep her going every day.
