John Johnson is officially a southern transplant. Raised in Smithtown, New York, he, his wife, Margaret, and his son, Tyus are excited to call Winston-Salem home. Prior to joining WXII 12 News in the summer of 2021, John worked for Spectrum News in Syracuse, NY for five years. He’s also worked for WBKB-TV in Alpena Michigan, as well as MLB Network, where he earned an Emmy Award. During his career in sports journalism, John covered the NCAA Men’s and Women’s basketball Tournament, ACC and Big10 football, as well as countless other interest stories in Central, New York. Most recently, he was promoted to Sports Director in August of 2023 at WXII 12 News. Those who know John and his wife, know they are avid sports fans. John was a two-sport athlete at Union College, in Schenectady NY, where he played football and baseball. He would later attend Quinnipiac University to obtain his Masters Degree in Interactive Media/Communications. When he’s not working, you’ll find John spending time with his family and their two dogs, Peyton and Penny. Most likely, the two humans in the group will have a beer in their hand. He and his wife are not abashed by their love of craft beers and sports.
