North Carolina teens found after escaping Holly Hill hospital in Raleigh, officials say
WE’LL BREAK IT DOWN FOR YOU NEXT, MICHELLE. THANK YOU. A NEW STUDY FINDS THE CITY OF WINSTON-SALEM IS THE DEADLIEST IN THE COUNTRY FOR RUSH HOUR DRIVING. THE RESEARCH WAS CONDUCTED BY A GROUP OF INJURY LAWYERS IN VEGAS. THEY LOOKED AT DATA FROM 2017 THROUGH 2021. IN THAT TIME, 124 PEOPLE WERE KILLED ON THE ROAD AND OF THOSE, ONE THIRD HAPPENED BETWEEN 7 AND 9 A.M. AND 5 TO 7 P.M. THE PROPORTION OF RUSH HOUR FATALITIES IN WINSTON-SALEM IS MUCH HIGHER THAN THE NATIONAL AVERAGE. SERGEANT JOSHUA SHEETS, WITH THE WINSTON-SALEM POLICE DEPARTMENT, URGES THOSE BEHIND THE WHEEL TO TAKE DRIVING SERIOUSLY AND AVOID AS MANY DISTRACTIONS AS POSSIBLE. THERE IS AN INHERENT RISK BEHIND DRIVING WITH THE SAFETY AND IMPROVEMENTS IN VEHICLES. A LOT OF OUR MODERN CARS WITH YOU KNOW, AIRBAGS AND SEAT BELTS AND, YOU KNOW, A CRASH AVOIDANCE AND ALL THE THINGS THAT WE HAVE THAT MAKE CARS SAFER. ALSO, CO MAKES DRIVERS LESS, LESS ATTENTIVE OR LESS CONCERNED OF THE CONSEQUENCES IN THE OTHER CITIES. RANKED IN THE TOP FIVE DEADLIEST FOR RUSH HOUR CRASHES ARE SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA, FORT WAYNE, INDIANA. MOBILE, ALABAMA. AND AURORA, COLORADO. A TEENAGER HAS BEEN ARRESTED FOR FIRING A GUN INSIDE A HIGH POINT GROCERY STORE. THIS HAPPENED AT THE FOOD LION ON WEST CHESTER DRIVE. AS MARIA DEBONE REPORTS, OFFICERS WASTED NO TIME RESPONDING. RESPONDED IN MASS TO BECAUSE IT’S A SERIOUS, SERIOUS TYPE CALL. OVER 25 HIGH POINT POLICE OFFICERS RESPONDED TO THE SCENE. OFFICERS DETERMINED THAT ONE SHOT WAS FIRED AND NO ONE WAS HIT. 117 YEAR OLD SUSPECT WAS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY NOT FAR FROM THE FOOD LION. POLICE SAY THEY’RE THANKFUL THE SITUATION WASN’T WORSE. LIKE THE TRAIN FOR THE WORST. AND YOU KNOW THAT WAY WE’RE PREPARED WHEN IT’S NOT. HIGH POINT POLICE SAY THE GUN THE TEEN FIRED WAS STOLEN. THAT 17 YEAR-OLD IS NOW CHARGED WITH POSSESSION OF A STOLEN FIREARM, DISCHARGING A FIREARM WITHIN A STRUCTURE, AND POSSESSION OF A FIREARM BY A MINOR MARIA DEBONE REPORTING HIGH POINT POLICE SAY THE SUSPECT WAS TAKEN TO THE GUILFORD COUNTY JUVENILE DETENTION CENTER ON A SECURE CUSTODY ORDER. IT IS STILL UNCLEAR TONIGHT IF THIS WAS A TARGETED SHOOTING. TODAY MARKS TWO MONTHS SINCE A MOTHER OF FIVE FROM HIGH POINT WENT MISSING. ORGANIZATIONS INCLUDING THE AWARE FOUNDATION AND THE BLACK AND MISSING FOUNDATION HAVE BEEN HELPING MARISSA CARMICHAEL’S FAMILY CONDUCT EXTENSIVE SEARCHES. THE 25 YEAR OLD WAS LAST SEEN ON JANUARY 14TH AT THE EXXON ON EAST MARKET STREET, AROUND 340. THAT MORNING, SHE DIALED 911 FROM THE GAS STATION, SAYING A MAN HAD STOLEN HER PHONE. OFFICERS DID NOT ARRIVE UNTIL 40 MINUTES LATER, AND BY THEN SHE WAS GONE. IN MANY COMMUNITIES. IN OUR STATE CONTINUE TO GROW, AND THAT’S TYPICALLY GOOD NEWS. BUT IN SOME PLACES THAT GROWTH IS MORE THAN WHAT LOCAL SCHOOL SYSTEMS CAN HANDLE. AS JOSHUA DAVIS SHOWS US TONIGHT, ONE OF THOSE SCHOOL SYSTEMS IS ALAMANCE BURLINGTON. RIGHT BEHIND ME IS WOODLAWN MIDDLE SCHOOL, SITTING OVER 100% OF ITS STUDENT CAPACITY. ABS HAS. OFFICIALS JUST SHOWED ME DATA THAT SAYS MORE SCHOOLS COULD BE HEADING IN THE SAME DIRECTION THAT SCHOOL WAS BUILT FOR 650 STUDENTS. WE HAVE ABOUT. 750 STUDENTS IN THAT BUILDING RIGHT NOW. NOW ACROSS ALAMANCE COUNTY, 11 OUT OF THE DISTRICT’S 34 SCHOOL BUILDINGS ARE AT OR OVER CAPACITY, JUST A YEAR AFTER REZONING THE DISTRICT TO FUNNEL KIDS INTO THE NEWLY BUILT SOUTHEAST HIGH SCHOOL, THEY MAY HAVE TO DO IT AGAIN. WE SORT OF KNEW THIS WAS COMING. IT WAS SORT OF PREDICTED THAT WE WOULD HAVE THIS KIND OF GROWTH IN THE EASTERN ZONE. SO THAT’S WHY WE’RE ONCE AGAIN, UH, MOVING SOME OF THOSE ZONAL LINES SO THAT WE CAN ELIMINATE SOME OF THE OVER CROWDING. AND THE NUMBERS SEEM TO POINT IN THAT DIRECTION, TOO, FOR EXAMPLE, WHILE E.M. HOLT ELEMENTARY IS JUST AT 57% CAPACITY, HAW RIVER IS 103%. WOODLAWN MIDDLE SCHOOL IS AT 115% CAPACITY COMPARED TO GRAHAM MIDDLE AT 69%. OBVIOUSLY, ANYTIME YOU SEE A JOB ANNOUNCEMENT IN THIS PART OF THE THE STATE, THAT EQUALS STUDENTS FOR US. SO WE’RE SEEING A LOT OF GROWTH IN SCHOOLS OVER CAPACITY, PRESENTS SAFETY CONCERNS FROM CLASS SIZES TO AFTER SCHOOL TRAFFIC AND ABSCESS, SAYS DEALING WITH THAT MAY MEAN ADDING ANOTHER BUILDING TO EASE THE PRESSURE ON OUR SCHOOL BOARD IS ALREADY SORT OF MENTIONED THAT THERE WILL HAVE TO BE A CONVERSATION OF BRINGING ON ANOTHER BUILDING AT SOME POINT. POTENTIALLY A BOND REFERENDUM IN THE COUNTY TO BRING ON ANOTHER SCHOOL AT SOME POINT SOON. THIS UPCOMING SCHOOL YEAR. ZONING HAS ALREADY BEEN FINALIZED AND APPROVED. HOWEVER, THE BOARD OF EDUCATION WILL HAVE TO LOOK AT REZONING ON A YEAR BY YEAR BASIS. MOVING INTO THE FUTURE IN ALAMANCE COUNTY. I’M JOSHUA DAVIS FOR WXII 12 NEWS. STUDENTS IN LEXINGTON CITY SCHOOLS WILL RETURN FROM SUMMER BREAK A LITTLE EARLIER THAN USUAL. THE BOARD OF EDUCATION THERE IS OUT WITH THIS UPDATED 2425 SCHOOL CALENDAR FOR THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL IS AUGUST 12TH. THAT’S TWO WEEKS EARLIER THAN WHAT THE STATE LAW ALLOWS. SEVERAL OTHER TRIAD SCHOOL DISTRICTS, INCLUDING WINSTON-SALEM, FORSYTH COUNTY SCHOOLS. THEY’RE DOING THE EXACT SAME THING IN BOTH DISTRICTS. NEXT SCHOOL YEAR ENDS EARL
