Sparta Town Manager Ryan Wilmoth, Attorney Whitney Ivy and Mayor Wes Brinegar all announced their resignations.
Although the town manager and attorney were both absent, the mayor read their resignation letters aloud.
"I can understand the manager quitting," said Dara Buck, a Sparta resident. "I don't understand why Wes quit, but I think it was probably best because there was a lot going on."
Another council member made a motion to appoint Kevin Dowell as the town manager. Video from the meeting shows the moment the conversation took a turn.
"You guys are jumping to the wrong beat. You have no idea what you're doing — you lost your attorney and now your town manager. You're getting ready to lose other employees. I'm just telling you, eventually, this will fall in your lap," Brinegar said.
That's when the mayor announced his own resignation.

"You hereby have my resignation as mayor of this town," Brinegar said. "I will not be a part of something that is so corrupt right now behind the scenes to eliminate a man that has done so much for this town."
Some Sparta residents said they are shocked, confused and concerned for their town's leadership and want explanations as to why this is happening.
"I'm curious to find out why and what's happening and see what's going on in this town because it's shocking news to all of us," said Sparta resident Bobbie Clark.
WXII did reach out to several council members, who declined to comment.
Brinegar said he is working on preparing a statement, and he will remain mayor until March 29.
