ORG. AND TODAY, COMMUNITY MEMBERS CELEBRATED THE START OF CONSTRUCTION FOR THE FINAL MILE OF THE DOWNTOWN GREENWAY IN GREENSBORO. THE FUTURE WESTERN BRANCH SECTION IS EXPECTED TO BREAK GROUND FOR CONSTRUCTION NEXT WEEK. WXII 12 NEWS STAR CONNOR ATTENDED THE KICKOFF CELEBRATION OF THE FINAL CONSTRUCTION PROJECT AND HAS MORE ON THIS STORY. I’M REALLY EXCITED ABOUT IT. RUNNERS LIKE KEITH GREWGIOUS SAY THEY CAN’T WAIT FOR THE FINAL MILE OF THE DOWNTOWN GREENWAY IN GREENSBORO TO BE COMPLETED, GREW HORSE RUNS THE GREENWAY 3 TO 4 TIMES A WEEK, AND HE SAYS IT’S A WONDERFUL SOURCE FOR THOSE LOOKING TO GET OUT AND ENJOY THE AREA. I THINK HAVING SOMETHING LIKE THIS, WE TAKE IT FOR GRANTED, BUT IF YOU GO PLACES WHERE YOU DON’T HAVE IT, YOU REALLY GET A SENSE FOR FOR BEING ABLE TO UTILIZE THINGS LIKE THIS. IT’S AN ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION AVENUE FOR CYCLISTS AND PEDESTRIANS AND DOG WALKERS AND FAMILIES. IT CONNECTS EIGHT DIFFERENT NEIGHBORHOODS THAT SURROUND THE DOWNTOWN GREENSBORO AREA. PROJECT MANAGER DEB BERNIE SANDERS SAYS THE FINAL CONSTRUCTION PHASE OF THE GREENWAY IS EXPECTED TO TAKE 18 MONTHS TO COMPLETE. IT’S A LOT MORE THAN JUST PUTTINGPAVEMENT ON THE GROUND AND ADDING ALL OF OUR WONDERFUL FEATURES, INCLUDING PUBLIC ART, SITE FURNISHINGS, SIGNAGE, LIGHTING, UM, SO THAT’S WHY IT TAKES LONGER THAN THAN PEOPLE EXPECT CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON MONDAY, AND ONCE COMPLETED, THE GREENWAY WILL BE A TOTAL OF FOUR MILES. WE HAVE SEEN A LOT OF ACTIVITY THROUGH HERE AND WE KNOW THAT ONCE THE TRANSFORMATION IS COMPLETE, THAT NUMBER IS ONLY GOING TO GROW. THE DOWNTOWN GREENWAY IS EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED BY SUMMER OF 2025, AND GREENSBORO, STAR CONNOR WXII 12 NEWS AND ONCE AGAIN, CONSTRUCTION WILL BEGIN. THIS COMING MONDAY AT 9 A.M. THIS WILL BE ON SMITH STREET TO SPRING GARDEN STREET IN GREENSBORO. THE CONSTRUCTION WILL CLOSE THE PATHWAY BETWEEN THOSE STREETS FOR PEDESTRIANS AND CYCLISTS. CITY OFFICIALS ALSO SAY NORTH MYRTLE BOULEVARD, BETWEEN EAST LINDSE

Saturday, community members celebrated the start of construction for the final mile of the Downtown Greenway in Greensboro. When you go to places that don't have it you really get a sense for being able to utilize things like this," he added. "It's an active transportation avenue for cyclist, pedestrians and dog walkers and families. It connects eight different neighborhoods that surround the downtown Greensboro area," Greenways & Gardens Program Coordinator, Chelsea Phipps said. Project Manager Dabney Sanders said the final construction phase of the greenway is expected to take 18 months to complete.Watch: NOWCAST streaming newscasts "It's a lot more than just putting pavement on the ground and adding all of our wonderful features including public art, site furnishings, signage, lighting so that's why it takes longer than what people expect," Sanders explained. Construction begins on Monday. Once complete, the Greenway will be a total of 4 miles. "We've seen a lot of activity through here and we know that once the transformation is complete that number is only going to grow," Phipps said. The Downtown Greenway is expected to be completed by summer 2025.
