UNC-Chapel Hill officials said a faculty member was killed during a shooting on campus Monday afternoon. “This is truly a tragic day for our campus community,” UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz said during a news conference. “I’m grieved to report one of our faculty members was killed in this shooting,” Guskiewicz said.UNC-Chapel Hill said Zijie Yan, an associate professor in the Department of Applied Physical Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences was killed in the shooting. Yan worked for the University since 2019. The university said they're in contact with Yan's family and providing resources and support. On Tuesday, Tailei Qi was charged with first-degree murder and possession of a weapon on educational property. He also made his first court appearance Tuesday afternoon. A public defender will represent Qi. He's being held under no bond and his next hearing will be Sept. 18.Police said he was taken into custody Monday following the shooting. “We will work to rebuild that sense of trust and safety within our community,” Guskiewicz said. “Our hearts are with the family of our fellow faculty member and those who are personally connected to the victim and those traumatized by this senseless act of violence.” University police said they received a shots fired call in the Caudill Laboratories on South Road around 1:02 p.m.The campus sent an emergency notification reporting an armed and dangerous person on or near campus.The alert was around 1 p.m. University police advised all students, faculty and staff to: Go inside immediately. Close windows and doors. Stay until further notice. Follow directions from emergency responders or University officials. There was a significant police presence at the UNC-Chapel Hill campus and along South Road. Students were seen leaving buildings with their hands in the air near Kenan Labs on South Road. An area near the bell tower was also closed off. Chapel Hill campus transit buses also suspended operations. Police said the suspect was taken into custody around 2:38 p.m. Monday.
