CHIEF JAMES WILL BE PROVIDING ADDITIONAL DETAILS ON THE INVESTIGATION AND I’M HERE JUST TO SHARE SOME ADDITIONAL UPDATES. AND AS YOU WELL KNOW, WE SHARED OUR CAMPUS COMMUNITY EARLIER TODAY, THE TRAGIC LOSS OF DR. JAY YANG, WHO WAS KILLED YESTERDAY IN KARLOFF LABS. DR. YANG WAS AN ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN THE DEPARTMENT OF APPLIED PHYSICAL SCIENCES IN THE COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES. HE JOINED OUR FACULTY IN JULY OF 2019. HE WAS A BELOVED COLLEAGUE, MENTOR AND A FRIEND TO SO MANY ON OUR CAMPUS AND A FATHER TO TWO YOUNG CHILDREN. MY LEADERSHIP TEAM AND I HAVE MET WITH HIS COLLEAGUES IN THE DEPARTMENT OF APPLIED PHYSICAL SCIENCES AND CHEMISTRY TO EXPRESS OUR CONDOLENCES. WE’VE ALSO HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET WITH MEMBERS OF DR. YANG’S FAMILY AT AND WE’RE DOING EVERYTHING THAT WE CAN DO TO NOT ONLY EXPRESS OUR CONDOLENCES, BUT CERTAINLY TO ASSIST THEM AS THEY ENDURE THIS TERRIBLE LOSS. I HOPE THAT YOU’LL JOIN ME IN PRAYING FOR THEIR LOVED ONES AS THEY ARE CERTAINLY HURTING AT THIS TIME. IN HONOR OF DR. YANG’S MEMORY, WE WILL RING THE BELL TOWER HERE ON CAMPUS TOMORROW. AT 102. I’VE SPOKEN WITH FACULTY AND STUDENTS WHO SAT TOGETHER THROUGH THE LOCKDOWN YESTERDAY AND OUR EMERGENCY OPERATION CENTER AND THE UNCW POLICE THAT HAVE BEEN WORKING TIRELESSLY THROUGHOUT THESE PAST MANY HOURS TO GATHER INFORMATION AND FIND ANSWERS AS WE CONTINUE TO THIS INVESTIGATION TOGETHER FOR OUR FACULTY, STAFF AND STUDENTS FOLLOW THE PROTOCOLS THAT WE’VE PUT IN PLACE AND WORK TOGETHER TO ENSURE EACH OTHER’S SAFETY IN ACCORDANCE WITH OUR EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT POLICY AND OUR CAROLINA READY CAMPUS PREPAREDNESS PROGRAM, SOMETHING THAT, AGAIN, WE’VE WORKED HARD TO PUT INTO PLACE OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS. HE IS BEING HELD WITHOUT BAIL AT THE ORANGE COUNTY JAIL. THROUGH THE INVESTIGATION. ROWAN IN THE LAST 24 HOURS, WE HAVE DETERMINED THAT THE VICTIM AND SUSPECT KNEW EACH OTHER AND THE SUSPECT WENT DIRECTLY TO THE VICTIM AND THEN LEFT CALDWELL LOUNGE RIGHT NOW, THE SUSPECT IS FACING FELONY CHARGES OF FIRST DEGREE MURDER AND POSSESSION OF A FIREARM ON EDUCATIONAL ROB WU HIS FIRST APPEARANCE APPEARANCE WAS EARLIER TODAY AT 2 P.M. HE IS BEING HELD WITHOUT BOND. ADDITIONAL CHARGES MAY BE ADDED AS THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES. THE SUSPECT WAS ARRESTED YESTERDAY BY OUR PARTNERS AT THE TOWN OF CHAPEL HILL POLICE DEPARTMENT ON WILLIAMS CIRCLE IN CHAPEL HILL. THE SUSPECT’S CAR WAS LOCATED ON CAMPUS AND HAS BEEN IMPOUND AND IS BEING PROCESSED BY THE FBI. EVIDENCE RESPONSE TEAM. THE FIREARM USED IN YESTERDAY’S SHOOTING HAS NOT BEEN RECOVERED. WE CONTINUE A THOROUGH SEARCH FOR THE FIREARM IN ANY ADDITIONAL EVIDENCE, FBI VICTIM SERVICES HAS BEEN PROVIDING SERVICES TO THE VICTIM’S FAMILY AND IDENTIFIED WITNESSES. AT THIS TIME, IT IS STILL TOO EARLY TO ESTABLISH A DEFINITIVE MOTIVE. THIS WILL BE SOMETHING THAT WE WILL CONTINUE TO DETERMINE THROUGHOUT THE COURSE OF THE INVESTIGATION. UNC-Chapel Hill faculty member killed, suspect charged with murder
UNC-Chapel Hill officials said a faculty member was killed during a shooting on campus Monday afternoon. “This is truly a tragic day for our campus community,” UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz said during a news conference. “I’m grieved to report one of our faculty members was killed in this shooting,” Guskiewicz said.UNC-Chapel Hill said Zijie Yan, an associate professor in the Department of Applied Physical Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences was killed in the shooting. Yan worked for the University since 2019. The university said they're in contact with Yan's family and providing resources and support. On Tuesday, Tailei Qi was charged with first-degree murder and possession of a weapon on educational property. He also made his first court appearance Tuesday afternoon. A public defender will represent Qi. He's being held under no bond and his next hearing will be Sept. 18.Police said he was taken into custody Monday following the shooting. “We will work to rebuild that sense of trust and safety within our community,” Guskiewicz said. “Our hearts are with the family of our fellow faculty member and those who are personally connected to the victim and those traumatized by this senseless act of violence.” University police said they received a shots fired call in the Caudill Laboratories on South Road around 1:02 p.m.The campus sent an emergency notification reporting an armed and dangerous person on or near campus.The alert was around 1 p.m. University police advised all students, faculty and staff to: Go inside immediately. Close windows and doors. Stay until further notice. Follow directions from emergency responders or University officials. There was a significant police presence at the UNC-Chapel Hill campus and along South Road. Students were seen leaving buildings with their hands in the air near Kenan Labs on South Road. An area near the bell tower was also closed off. Chapel Hill campus transit buses also suspended operations. Police said the suspect was taken into custody around 2:38 p.m. Monday. The Carolina community is mourning the loss of Zijie Yan, an associate professor who was killed in a shooting. 

On Tuesday, Tailei Qi was charged with first-degree murder and possession of a weapon on educational property.

"My office is in communication with law enforcement and officials at UNC-Chapel Hill who are taking precautions to protect campus safety following today’s shooting. This is a tragic way to start a new semester and the state will provide any assistance necessary to support the UNC community."
