Winston-Salem woman recalls attack while jogging; police charge suspect
CLOSURES WOULD LAST. RIGHT NOW, AT 4:00, A WOMAN IS RECOUNTING THE MOMENTS THAT SHE WAS ATTACKED WHILE RUNNING IN WINSTON SALEM. THE MAN ACCUSED OF ATTACKING HER, DYLAN SMYERS, WAS ARRESTED AND CHARGED THIS AFTERNOON WITH SECOND DEGREE KIDNAPING AND SEXUAL BATTERY. OUR KARA PETERS SPOKE TO THE VICTIM AND JOINS US FROM POLICE HEADQUARTERS NOW WITH MORE. KARA? YEAH, DEVONTE AND LINDSEY. THAT’S RIGHT. THE WOMAN WHO DID NOT WANT TO BE IDENTIFIED SAYS SHE IS STILL PRETTY SHAKEN UP FROM SUCH A SCARY EXPERIENCE. BUT TONIGHT, SHE DOES HAVE A MESSAGE FOR WOMEN OR ANYONE GOING OUTDOORS ON HOW THEY CAN BEST STAY SAFE. THE WOMAN WHO LIVES IN THE DOWNTOWN AREA SAYS SINCE JANUARY, SHE HAS ENJOYED RUNNING. AND WEDNESDAY WAS JUST LIKE ANY OTHER DAY. THE WOMAN RECALLS GOING FOR A JOG THAT EVENING, AND INITIALLY PASSING SMYERS ON RESEARCH PARKWAY. I TOOK A TURN ON RAMS DRIVE AND MY HEADPHONES ARE OPEN EAR SO I CAN STILL HEAR MY SURROUNDINGS AND I COULD HEAR FOOTSTEPS SO BEING A WOMAN, YOU KNOW, YOU DO LIKE TO BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS. SO I TURN AROUND AND I SEE IT’S HIM AND I’M LIKE, WELL, THAT’S WEIRD. HE WAS WALKING IN THE OTHER DIRECTION. SHE LATER TOOK A TURN ON SALEM AVENUE, RUNNING ABOUT A 14 MINUTE MILE WHEN SHE CONTINUED HEARING FOOTSTEPS, PROMPTING HER TO TURN AROUND. I SAID, OH MY GOSH, YOU SCARED ME. I’M JUST TRYING TO BE FRIENDLY. I REALLY DIDN’T THINK THAT THIS GUY WAS ANY BAD NEWS. AND HE SAID, OH, I’M NOT TRYING TO SCARE YOU. SO HE GRABBED ME AND STARTED TRYING TO PULL ME AWAY FROM THE ROAD, LIKE KIND OF TOWARD IT’S LIKE A DITCH KIND OF TOWARD THE RAILROAD. AND HE’S HE SAID, I’M NOT GOING TO HURT YOU. JUST COME WITH ME. AND I’M JUST SCREAMING, HELP TO THE TOP OF MY LUNGS. LIKE, NO, PLEASE, HELP, HELP. THE WOMAN SAYS THAT STRUGGLE LASTED FOR ABOUT 15 SECONDS, SECONDS THAT FELT MUCH LONGER. I WAS LIKE, THIS IS IT FOR ME, LIKE HE’S GOING TO KILL ME OR HE’S GOING TO RAPE ME AND THIS IS IT FOR ME AND I’M NEVER GOING TO GET TO GO HOME. SMYERS EVENTUALLY LET GO AFTER A CAR WENT BY. TWO DAYS LATER, POLICE ARRESTED AND CHARGED HIM WITH SECOND DEGREE KIDNAPING AND SEXUAL BATTERY THINGS. I WOULD HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY. I WISH I HAD PEPPER SPRAY WITH ME BECAUSE LIKE I SAID, I SAW HIM FOR TEN MINUTES FOLLOWING ME. SO, YOU KNOW, I THINK WHEN YOU ARE SURPRISED, YOU DON’T HAVE TIME TO, LIKE GET YOUR PEPPER SPRAY OUT AND GET READY. BUT I COULD HAVE HAD THAT IN HAND. LIKE WHILE I’M RUNNING. I DON’T WANT PEOPLE TO THINK THEY CAN’T GO RUNNING. WOMAN SHOULD BE ABLE TO GO RUN. BUT I THINK IT IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE SOME SORT OF SELF DEFENSE. SO I THINK PEPPER SPRAY IS I NEED TO GO BUY SOME. THAT’S WHAT I’M GOING TO DO. THIS WEEKEND. AND ACCORDING TO POLICE, SMYERS IS CURRENTLY BEING HELD AT THE FORSYTH COUNTY LAW ENFORCEMENT DETENTION CENTER. NO WORD ON HIS COURT DATE AT THIS TIME. AND THE WOMAN SAYS SHE DOES PLAN ON RETURNING BACK TO JOGGING AT SOME POINT, BUT ONLY WHEN SHE IS COMFORTABLE AND READY
