THIS AFTERNOON. BUT FIRST, ONE PERSON’S DEAD AFTER LEADING AUTHORITIES ON A CAR CHASE THIS MORNING FIRING SHOTS AT LAW ENFORCEMENT AND SHUTTING DOWN PART OF HIGHWAY 421 FOR HOURS. WXII 12 MARIA DEBONE JOINS US LIVE AT THE FORSYTH COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE WITH MORE ON THE STORY WE’VE BEEN FOLLOWING SINCE EARLY THIS MORNING. REALLY. WELL, ACCORDING TO THE FORSYTH COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE, THIS ALL STARTED AROUND 2 A.M. WHEN A DRIVER REFUSED TO PULL OVER FOR A DEPUTY ON LEWISVILLE CLEMMONS ROAD, AND THEN A CHASE BEGAN, ACCORDING TO AUTHORITIES DURING THE CHASE, THE DRIVER FIRED MULTIPLE SHOTS AT LAW ENFORCEMENT, INCLUDING WINSTON-SALEM OFFICERS WHO WERE CALLED IN FOR ADDITIONAL HELP. WINSTON-SALEM POLICE SAY ONE OF THEIR PATROL CARS WAS RIDDLED WITH BULLETS AND ALL OF A SUDDEN I JUST HEAR THIS. CARLY IT SOUND LIKE IT WAS JUST SPEEDING OR SOMETHING AND I THOUGHT NOTHING OF IT. AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN I HEAR SHOTS. AUTHORITIES SAY THE DRIVER CONTINUED TO SHOOT AT RESPONDING OFFICERS EVEN AFTER HIS CAR CRASHED IN ROLLED ON HIGHWAY 421, NORTHBOUND AT 2:21 A.M. THE SUSPECT THEN EXITED THE CAR WITH A RIFLE. ACCORDING TO THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE, THE SUSPECT WAS INJURED DURING THE CRASH AND FROM BEING STRUCK BY GUNFIRE DURING THE SHOOTING. THAT SUSPECT HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS 29 YEAR OLD ALEXANDER PARKS HOLLAND. HE WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD BY EMS DESPITE LIFE SAVING EFFORTS BY OFFICERS. ACCORDING TO AUTHORITIES, THREE SHERIFF DEPUTIES AND TWO WINSTON SALEM POLICE OFFICERS WERE INVOLVED IN THE SHOOTING, BUT NONE WERE SERIOUSLY INJURED. ONE SHERIFF’S DEPUTY WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE HOSPITAL FOR A NON-LIFE THREATENING INJURIES, BUT HAS SINCE BEEN RELEASED. FORSYTH COUNTY SHERIFF BOBBY KIMBROUGH RELEASED A STATEMENT SAYING IN PART, FIRSTLY, WE EXTEND OUR CONDOLENCES TO THE FRIENDS AND LOVED ONES OF MR. HOLLAND. THIS IS TRULY A REMINDER OF THE DANGER THAT THE MEN AND THE WOMEN WHO SERVE AND PROTECT ENCOUNTER DAILY. OUR FIVE LAW AND PERSON LAW PERSONNEL HAVE BEEN PLACED ON ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE. A suspect who was involved in a shootout with officers during a pursuit on a highway that ended in a crash has died. The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office said a deputy tried to stop a vehicle around 2:10 a.m. on Lewisville-Clemmons Road near U.S. 421 southbound, but said the driver refused to stop. According to the sheriff's office, the driver of the car fired multiple shots at patrol vehicles during a pursuit. The sheriff's office said multiple patrol vehicles were struck by gunfire, including one Winston-Salem police vehicle. The sheriff's office said the suspect, Alexander Parks Holland, 29, of Charleston, South Carolina exited the vehicle with a rifle and continued shooting. Officers fired their weapons and struck Holland. The sheriff's office said officers attempted life-saving measures but Holland who was also injured from gunfire and the crash died. The sheriff's office said one deputy was transported to a local hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries and was later released. According to the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office and the Winston-Salem Police Department, the two officers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave per standard procedure. The two officers involved are Officer Lancaster who's a five-year veteran of the Winston-Salem Police Department and is currently assigned to the Patrol Division. The other officer involved is Officer Perrell who's a four-year veteran of the Winston-Salem Police Department and is currently assigned to the Patrol Division. The sheriff's office said three deputies are also on administrative leave but haven't released their names. “Firstly, we extend our condolences to the friends and loved ones of Mr. Holland. This is truly a reminder of the danger that the men and the women who serve and protect encounter daily. Because of our love and our commitment to our community, you can rest assured that we are proud to serve and protect, and we will continue to do so. All that we ask in return is your continued prayers and support,” Sheriff Bobby F. Kimbrough, Jr. said. The sheriff's office asked the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation to independently investigate this incident. The Winston-Salem Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division also responded to the scene and assumed the investigation into the assault of the officers. An administrative investigation will be conducted by the Winston-Salem Police Department's Professional Standards Division. This is a developing story. It will be updated as we get more information.
