JOSHUA DAVIS JOINS US FROM ALAMANCE COUNTY TONIGHT, WHERE HE SPOKE WITH BOARD MEMBERS ABOUT HOW RECENT HIGH PROFILE PERSONNEL SHAKEUPS ARE IMPACTING THE DISTRICT. THIS WAS DOCTOR CHRISTIE DAVIS’S FIRST BOARD SESSION AS THE ACTING SUPERINTENDENT. JUST A WEEK AFTER THE BOARD OF EDUCATION ACCEPTED THE RESIGNATION OF DOCTOR DANE BUTLER. WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER, AND WE ARE. WE’RE LEARNING AS WE GO. DOCTOR DANE BUTLER’S DEPARTURE WAS PRECEDED BY THE SUSPENSION OF ABSCESS. DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT LOWELL ROGERS IN LATE FEBRUARY, WHO WAS BEING INVESTIGATED BY THE FBI AFTER FAILING TO REPORT THE ALLEGED ABUSE OF AN EAST LAWN ELEMENTARY STUDENT TO LAW ENFORCEMENT. JUST DAYS BEFORE THAT, KIM MCVAY WAS DISMISSED AS THE DISTRICT’S CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER IN THE MIDST OF THE DISTRICT STRUGGLING WITH SIGNIFICANT FINANCIAL STRAINS. WE ARE, UM, AWARE THAT YOU FACE MANY CHALLENGES WHICH HAVE BROUGHT MANY CHANGES, PARTICULARLY IN KEY LEADERSHIP POSITION, AND WE ARE WORKING QUICKLY TO FILL THOSE POSITIONS. BUT YET DILIGENTLY AS WELL, TO MAKE SURE THAT WE DO GET THE RIGHT PEOPLE. MOST RECENTLY, THE DISTRICT’S PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER, LES ATKINS, HAS ANNOUNCED HIS DEPARTURE FROM THE SCHOOL SYSTEM BY THE END OF MARCH. IN SPITE OF THE CHANGES OF FOUR MAJOR POSITIONS WITHIN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT. BOARD CHAIR SANDY ELLINGTON GRAVES SAYS IT’S LIT A FIRE UNDER THE BOARD OF EDUCATION MEMBERS. I THINK THAT IT HAS ALLOWED US TO REALLY SHARPEN OUR FOCUS ACADEMICALLY AND REALLY, UM, WORK HARD TO MOVE US FORWARD AND AND DO SO WITH A, UM, A NEW COMMITMENT BOTH TO THE DISTRICT AND TO THE STUDENTS. AND THAT’S THAT’S REALLY WHAT IT’S ABOUT. IT’S JUST DOING WHAT’S BEST FOR OUR STUDENTS. AND THAT’S WHAT WE’VE REALLY GOT TO, TO REALLY SHARPEN OUR FOCUS ON AND MOVE FORWARD. AND GRAVES MESSAGE TO PARENTS REGARDING THE LAST FEW WEEKS IS THAT THE BOARD IS DOING ITS BEST TO RIGHT THE SHIP, AND THEY’RE ASKING FOR PARENTS CONTINUED SUPPORT MOVING FORWARD IN ALAMANCE COUNTY. We're working quickly to fill those positions, but yet diligently as well, to make sure that we get the right people."Most recently, the district’s public information officer, Les Atkins, announced his departure from the school system by the end of March. In spite of the changes of four major positions within the school district, Graves said it’s lit a fire under the board of education members. "I think that it has allowed us to really sharpen our focus academically, really work hard to move us forward and do so with a new commitment both to the district and into the students," she said. "That's really what it's about. It's just doing what's best for our students. That's what we really got to really sharpen our focus on and move forward."
