Missing mastiff named Ladybug trapped 14 miles from home, reunited with owners after 3 months
EIGHT NEWS AT SIX. A TALE WITH A HAPPY ENDING. AFTER MONTHS OF SEARCHING, A WAUKEE FAMILY IS REUNITED WITH THEIR DOG THAT RAN AWAY BACK IN NOVEMBER. THEY LOOK SO HAPPY, RIGHT, LADYBUG FOUND HER WAY BACK HOME OVER THE WEEKEND. KCCI’S MARCUS MCINTOSH SPOKE WITH THE GRATEFUL OWNER AND SOME OF THE PEOPLE INVOLVED IN FINDING LADYBUG. WE ARE AT THE HOME OF THE DELPHOS IN WAUKEE WHERE THEIR BELOVED MASTIFF LADYBUG WAS RETURNED TO THEM OVER THE WEEKEND AFTER BEING MISSING FOR THREE MONTHS. AND THIS IS WHERE LADYBUG HAS SAT ALMOST THE ENTIRE. TIME SHE’S BEEN BEEN HOME. OUR FAMILY IS SO HAPPY TO HAVE HER BACK. DEBORAH DILLOW SAYS SHE KNEW THIS REUNION WAS INEVITABLE DESPITE A SNOWSTORM AND BITTERLY COLD TEMPERATURES. SHE NEVER LOST HOPE OR FAITH. HOW DO YOU GIVE UP HOPE. YOU KNOW, WE WERE. NEVER GOING TO STOP. SHE ALSO KNOWS THIS REUNION IS NOT POSSIBLE WITHOUT HELP FROM PEOPLE SHE HAD NEVER MET BEFORE. HER DOG WENT MISSING. PEOPLE THAT LOOKED EVERY DAY. 300 PEOPLE OUT THERE WITH THEIR EYES OPEN AND DRIVING TO WORK, COMING HOME. THE LITTLE BOYS NEXT DOOR THAT GOT OUT AND DELIVERED OVER 40 FLIERS IN THE COLD. JUST SO MANY PEOPLE. THIS COMMUNITY’S AMAZING. THESE ARE THREE OF THOSE VOLUNTEERS. TODD RECTOR OF THE IOWA STORM CHASING NETWORK, HIS DRONE EXPERTISE WOULD EVENTUALLY HELP VOLUNTEERS TRACK AND TRAP LADYBUG AND USING MY DRONE, WHICH HAS A. MUCH BETTER CAMERA, WE WERE ABLE TO GET CLOSE UP PICTURES, AND THERE WAS JUST NO DOUBT THIS WAS LADYBUG. WE WERE ALL JUST ELATED, AND MOLLY QUICK WAS ONE OF A HANDFUL OF VOLUNTEERS TO SEE LADYBUG WALK INTO THE TRAP IN ADEL, ABOUT 14 MILES FROM HOME, CALLING IT A MOMENT SHE WILL NEVER. FORGET. WE WERE WATCHING ON CAM IRA REMOTELY AND WE SHE WENT INTO THE TRAP. AND SHE BACKED BACK OUT. WAS STILL IN THE AREA. WE COULD SEE HER, BUT WE KIND OF THOUGHT WE LOST OUR CHANCE. AND THEN WHEN SHE WENT IN, THAT DOOR CLOSED AND AND WE KNEW THAT WE HAD HER, WE WERE ECSTATIC. A LOST DOG BROUGHT THESE THREE STRANGERS TOGETHER. WE, I THINK, ARE GOING TO BE FRIENDS OR HAVE SOME TYPE OF CONNECTION FOREVER. DEBORAH SAYS SHE IS NEVER LETTING LADYBUG OUTSIDE WITHOUT A TRACKER IN WAUKEE MARCUS MCINTOSH KCCI EIGHT NEWS IOWA’S NEWS LEADER. OH, I LOVE THAT STORY. SO WE HAD TO ASK THE VOLUNTEERS, WHAT’S NEXT? THEY’RE NOW TURNING THEIR ATTENTION TO HELPING FIND THIS GIRL. IT’S LIBBY, SHE’S A GOLDEN RETRIEVER. SHE’S BEEN MISSING SINCE LAST MAY. It was a wonderful weekend for one Iowa family.The Dillow family's dog Ladybug was found and returned home three months after she ran off."Our family is so happy to have her back," said Deborah Dillow.Dillow says that despite a blizzard and freezing conditions, she never doubted Ladybug would eventually be back in her arms. She says faith and volunteers she had never met before her dog went missing are key to the happy homecoming.We caught up with some of the volunteers.Todd Rector is with the Iowa Strom Chasing Network. His drone expertise helped find and track Ladybug."We were able to get close-up pictures, and it was no doubt, it was Ladybug," Rector said.That was near Adel, more than 10 miles from her home. Once they confirmed it was Ladybug, the crew set a trap that eventually snagged the mastiff.All the volunteers we spoke with said it was hard to keep a dry eye when they finally caught Ladybug and were able to take her home.
