'The dog was screaming': Man fights off coyote who attacked 3-year-old dog
A 3-year-old Massachusetts dog named Kyan is getting a lot of love from his owner, after he rescued the dog from the jaws of a hungry coyote.
"He was right there at the bottom of the stairs," said Jim Mercado, of Everett, Massachusetts. "Just had him in his mouth, swinging him around like a rag doll. The dog was screaming."
Mercado said he heard his 15-pound dog crying for help in the yard around 7:30 Thursday morning.
He says he ran out and grabbed the only weapon he could find.
"I grabbed this thing (pointing to a broom), and I hit him as hard as I could over the head first," Mercado said.
Animal control is now warning others in the area that coyotes can strike even in densely populated neighborhoods.
"I will just keep be vigilant and stay out here with them," Mercado said. "Hopefully the coyote's afraid of me."
The little dog suffered no puncture wounds and no broken bones.
