MEMBERS. WE’RE ALSO HEARING FROM THE FAMILY OF A MAN KILLED IN WINSTON-SALEM. IT IS THAT CITY’S EIGHTH HOMICIDE ALREADY IN 2023. AND JANUARY ISN’T OVER YET. DARREL RICE, JUNIOR WAS A BROTHER, A FATHER, A SON, AND A MENTOR. THE POLICE SAY RICE AND TWO OTHER PEOPLE WERE SHOT EARLY SUNDAY MORNING AT A PRIVATE PARTY AT A BUILDING ON NORTH LIBERTY STREET. POLICE SAY PEOPLE INSIDE GOT INTO A FIGHT, THEN IT MOVED OUTSIDE AND THAT’S WHEN THEY STARTED SHOOTING. RICE DIED AT THE SCENE. WE SPOKE WITH HIS MOTHER AND SISTER TODAY, REMEMBERING HIM AS A LOVABLE PERSON WHO CARED FOR PEOPLE. I THINK THEY HE SAID, ALWAYS, I SAY, I LOVE YOU, LOVE YOU, AND I’LL NEVER HEAR THAT AGAIN. AND IT JUST HURTS SO BAD. AND WE’VE HAD TO EXPLAIN TO FOUR KIDS THAT THEIR DAD IS GONE. THREE DON’T UNDERSTAND. AND HE HAS A SON THAT HE WAS VERY CLOSE TO. NO, THEY LIVE TOGETHER. WE HAVE TO EXPLAIN TO HIM YOUR DAD IS NEVER COMING HOME AGAIN. POLICE SAY THE TWO OTHER PEOPLE SHOT AT THIS PARTY ARE IN CRITICAL CONDITION RIGHT NOW. THAT INCLUDES A 17 YEAR OLD BOY. AS YOU JUST HEARD, THIS IS THE EIGHTH HOMICIDE IN SALEM ALREADY THIS YEAR. AS OF THIS DATE, A YEAR AGO, THE CITY WAS DEALING WITH ITS THIRD HOMICIDE CASE. A Triad family spoke out about their loved one, Darryl Rice Jr., who died of gun violence over the weekend.Winston-Salem police said Rice and two others were shot early Sunday morning at a private party at a building on North Liberty Street. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, officers said Rice died at the scene.
