A Triad family spoke out about their loved one, Darryl Rice Jr., who died of gun violence over the weekend.Winston-Salem police said Rice and two others were shot early Sunday morning at a private party at a building on North Liberty Street. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, officers said Rice died at the scene. Rice was shot and killed.His sister, Kecia Duzant, said he was the life of the party."They took a brother, a son, a father, a mentor. He was special to a lot of people. He meant a lot to a lot of people." He has a son he was close to, they lived together. We had to explain to him, 'Your dad isn’t coming home again.'” Rice's mother, Rachel Greenwood recounts his last words said to her that night.“I said stay safe. He said always, and I said, ‘I love you,’ and he said, ‘I love you,’ and now I’ll never hear that again, and it hurts so bad,” his mother said.Duzant is urging people to share and post memories they have of Darryl so that they can remember him.Watch: NOWCAST streaming newscasts"He was known for the love and the laughter that he brought to everybody’s life," Duzant said. "So that’s why I say continue to share those stories and those pictures and those moments because that’s the only thing keeping us together right now.” This marks the 8th homicide for 2023, as compared to three homicides during this same time frame in 2022, according to police.A candlelight vigil in honor of Rice will be held Wednesday starting a 6 p.m.The event will take place at Oak Summit Park in Winston-Salem.
