Triad communities honor late civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr.

HAPPENING NOW, IT IS DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JUNIOR DAY AND EVENTS ARE BEING HELD ALL AROUND THE TRIAD TO HONOR THE LATE CIVIL RIGHTS LEADERS LIFE AND LEGACY. WHERE THE 43RD ANNUAL DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. NOON HOUR COMMEMORATION THAT IS UNDERWAY. IT IS AT UNION BAPTIST CHURCH. RETIRED FORSYTH COUNTY DISTRICT COURT JUDGE DENISE HARTSFIELD IS THE KEYNOTE SPEAKER, AND THERE WILL ALSO BE PERFORMANCES OF INSPIRATIONAL MUSIC IN GREENSBORO. THE CITY HELD ITS 37TH ANNUAL DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JUNIOR MEMORIAL BREAKFAST EARLIER THIS MORNING THAT WAS HELD AT THE CARY CONVENTION CENTER. AND THE THEME THIS YEAR WAS EVERYDAY CHAMPIONS HONORING LOCAL CIVIL RIGHTS PIONEERS. THE CITY’S HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION SELECTED FIVE PEOPLE TO BE HONORED FOR THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS IN GREENSBORO. IT’S SO IMPORTANT TO NOT ONLY CELEBRATE THE WORK OF DR. KING, BUT CELEBRATE THOSE DOING THE WORK, BECAUSE WE WILL ALWAYS NEED A SUBSEQUENT GENERATION TO PUSH THE WORK FORWARD. AND SO WE BELIEVE THAT BY UPLIFTING THE WORK OF OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY MEMBERS WHO FIGHT FOR RIGHTS, WHO DO THE WORK OF DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION, WE’RE ALSO INSPIRING THAT NEXT GENERATION TO TAKE THAT LEAP, STAND FOR WHAT’S RIGHT AND DO THE WORK. CONE HEALTH’S DIRECTOR OF DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION, NIKITA GREENE, WAS THE KEYNOTE SPEAKER, AND THEY SPOKE ABOUT HOW TODAY’S EVENT FURTHERS THE GOAL OF THE HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR PEOPLE IN THIS CITY BY ENCOURAGING FAIRNESS AND RESPECT. AT HIGH POINT UNIVERSITY, IT IS A FULL DAY OF EVENTS TO HONOR DR. KING. THIS INCLUDES AN MLK DAY WORSHIP SERVICE, A SEED PACKAGING EVENT, AND WORKING WITH WEST AND MINISTRIES TO HELP FAMILIES FIGHTING FOOD INSECURITY. THIS MORNING, THE MINISTERS CONFERENCE OF HIGH POINT AND VICINITY HELD THEIR ANNUAL BREAKFAST AND A SPEECH CONTEST. STUDENTS FROM VARIOUS HIGH SCHOOLS COMPETED THERE. THE WINNER WAS AWARDED A $10,000 SCHOLARSHIP SHIP. STUDENTS TELL US IT IS ALL TO EMPHASIZE THE LEGACY OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. THE LEGACY OF DR. MLK IS REALLY IMPORTANT HERE TO YOU, ESPECIALLY SINCE WE REALLY EMPHASIZE SERVICE OUR STUDENTS PUT IN HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF HOURS OF SERVICE EACH YEAR. CERTAINLY AS A SENIOR, YOU KNOW, I’VE SPENT FOUR YEARS HERE, SO I REALLY WANT THAT OPPORTUNITY TO GIVE BACK AND SAY THANK YOU TO A PLACE THAT I’VE CALLED HOME FOR FOUR YEARS. THAT’S ABOUT THE THE THOUGHTS OR THE IDEALS THAT HE SHOWED TO THE WORLD. AND SO TODAY WE’RE COMING TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE UNITY AND TO CELEBRATE TOGETHERNESS AND TO CELEBRATE JUST TREATING EVERYONE RESPECTFULLY WITH KINDNESS. AS MARTIN LUTHER KING DEMONSTRATED TONIGHT, THE UNIVERSITY’S NINTH ANNUAL HUNGER BANQUET IS SET TO TAKE PLACE AT 7:00 IN BURLINGTON. THE AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURAL HISTORY CENTER IS TEAMING UP WITH THE CITY TO HOST AN MLK EVENT TODAY AS WELL. THEY ACTUALLY JUST GOT UNDERWAY A FEW MINUTES AGO. WE CAUGHT UP WITH ONE OF THE ORGANIZERS AHEAD OF IT, THOUGH, ON WHAT THE CIVIL RIGHTS LEADER MEANS TO HIM. HE ALSO STOOD FOR TRYING TO MAKE THE COUNTRY WORK FOR EVERYONE. ACTIVITIES INCLUDE DANCING, SINGING AND POETRY. THIS IS BEING HELD AT THE MAYKO BIGELOW COMMUNITY CENTER RIGHT NOW AT NORTH PARK IN BURLINGTON. TWO MORE EVENTS HAPPENING LATER TODAY. THAT’S HOSTED BY THE CARL CHAVEZ MEMORIAL BRANCH YMCA STARTS AT GREEN AND MAIN AND WILL END AT CUBAN AVENUE. THIS IS THE 20TH YEAR THE PARADE HAS BEEN HELD.
