Eliot, Vernard:

You should run chkconfig –add mdadmd

Vernard,

Try using mdmonitor instead of mdadm:

chkconfig –add mdmonitor

Maybe that is a RHEL 6-ism?

If your system has a hardware RAID controller, then that is the first place to look. You should be able to receive e-mails of hard drive failures (at a minimum). A quick googling suggests there might be some options for monitoring SMART as well:

Are there any comparable RAID array monitoring utilities for Windows Server 2008 R2?

Thanks,
