I was unable to do a “chkconfig –add mdadm” on my Centos 5.8 box. the mdadm package is installed. Maybe that is a RHEL 6-ism?

In reply to Kent Hamon. If your system has a hardware RAID controller, then that is the first place to look. You should be able to receive e-mails of hard drive failures (at a minimum). A quick googling suggests there might be some options for monitoring SMART as well: http://www.google.com/#&q=windows+server+monitor+smart+data
