Women's History Month: South Carolina woman continues to trailblaze path in entertainment industry
March is Women's History Month and March 8 was International Women's Day. Both titles encompass Lisa Lopez of Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Lopez, along with her husband Steve, are the co-owners of Stisa Talent Agency in Spartanburg, which is in the northern part of the state and is about 75 miles from Charlotte, North Carolina.
Lopez said she and her husband got the idea to start a talent agency back in 2016 after their son expressed interest in wanting to be featured in commercials and other opportunities on screen.
“If God wanted us to have a talent agency, he would give us one,” Lopez said. "I guess he wanted us to have one. We have been helping people get cast in movies, TV shows, print ads and full-blown campaigns.”
Lopez said she was initially faced with the question of whether or not she should start the agency in a bigger city where agencies seem to be located and have the most success.
"The Holy Spirit was guiding me and saying just do it in Spartanburg," Lopez said. "Stick with Spartanburg.”
In less than 10 years, Lopez said the agency has helped talent appear on some of the largest screens.
"The technology has enabled us to get our Stisa family members in front of the best casting directors," Lopez said. "All this is being done right here from Spartanburg. We've had a co-star opposite Clint Eastwood and even as a warmup partner for Kevin Hart. 'The Color Purple,' there’s 'The Mule' with Clint Eastwood, there’s 'Swagger,' there’s 'Mayor of Kingstown,' there’s a new one coming out called Luso starring Brian Patrick Wade from 'The Avengers.'”
Lopez said Stisa clients have been featured on Paramount+ and Pictures, Lifetime, Starz, Apple TV+, and Warner Bros., among many others.
"All of our people get auditions," Lopez said. "There aren’t a lot of agencies that can say that. We can’t make everybody famous, but we can make them professional, and my goal is to make them all confident.”
Lopez said it has been an incredible journey to break into a closed-circle, male-dominated industry.
"Here I am the exact opposite and saying hey, I need you to take a look at my kids from the Carolinas, and my adults from Greenville, Spartanburg, Charlotte,” Lopez said.
She also credits walking by faith, along with slowing down to hear God's voice, as the key to the agency's success thus far.
"Your plan is going to be different from your best friend’s plan, different from your sister or brother’s plan, and it might even be different from the plan that mom and dad had for you, but you just have to step out on faith and go for it,” Lopez said.
Lopez was also recently recognized in Spartanburg County as an African American trailblazer for her work with Stisa and her work with what she describes as a passion project called "Dark but Beautiful." She said "DBB" is based on a Bible verse related to King Solomon’s wife that she started in 2023, which allows her to provide confidence boosters through workshops for youth and adults. She will be speaking to the public at the Spartanburg County Library on June 18.
