Addison McDowell and Mark Walker face runoff in 6th Congressional District
One key race in our area is still undecided. None of the five Republican candidates for 6th District congress received 30 percent of the vote, meaning there will be a runoff between the top two candidates.
Due to redistricting, no Democrat ran for this seat, so the people of the 6th District will decide between former Congressman Mark Walker and political newcomer Addison McDowell to see who represents them in Washington.
McDowell finished first on Super Tuesday with 26 percent of the vote despite having never held political office. The key factor for the Davidson County native was the endorsement of former President Donald Trump. After his election night speech, McDowell admitted the endorsement definitely moved the needle in his favor.
Walker held this seat from 2015 to 2021. He has experience in runoffs. He defeated Phil Berger Jr. in 2014 to represent this district. Walker thanked supporters in his election night speech and touted his conservative record in Congress.
Neither candidate shared details about their runoff campaigns, but both said they're focused and ready.
McDowell says, "Now it's just a two-person race and I hope to keep all of your support and to earn the support of even more 6th district voters. I hope you'll agree with me and I hope you'll agree with President Donald Trump that I am the best candidate for the 6th district of North Carolina."
Walker says now that there are just two candidates, the message won't be diluted and voters will see that they have a clear choice.
"Do they want somebody that has a proven conservative track record or do they want somebody who's telling you they will have a conservative track record?"
Once approved, election day in this runoff is May 14.
