One man was killed after three armed intruders broke into his Mebane home and demanded money, according to deputies with the Orange County Sheriff's Office.On Sunday, deputies arrived at the home on the 6000 block of US 70 West around 12:40 a.m. where they found the 58-year-old victim, Jerry Lee Driggers, and two other residents inside. Investigators said during the break-in, Driggers fired a shotgun at the men, hitting one of them. Responding deputies and EMS personnel rendered aid and took Driggers to the hospital where he died during surgery.

The other residents of the home said they were also being held at gunpoint, but they were not physically injured, according to deputies.

Deputies said they found Clarence Brandon Hayes, 28, of Durham, outside in the parking lot of a business near the residence. He had a gunshot wound to the abdomen and underwent surgery at a nearby hospital, where he remains. Investigators took out the following charges against Hayes:

  • first-degree murder
  • first-degree burglary
  • first-degree kidnapping
  • felony conspiracy
  • injury to real property.
