Eden man facing drug and gun charges; bond set at $2 million, Rockingham County deputies say
WHEN YOU GO TO VOTE. NEW TONIGHT, A MAN IS FACING A NUMBER OF CHARGES AT A DAVIDSON COUNTY DEPUTIES SAY THEY WERE CALLED TO A HOME IN LEXINGTON LAST WEEK TO LOOK INTO A SEXUAL ASSAULT CASE. THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAYS DURING THEIR INVESTIGATION. 38 YEAR-OLD MATTHEW CLONTZ ADMITTED TO HAVING INAPPROPRIATE IMAGES OF CHILDREN ON HIS PHONE FROM A PLACE THAT HE LIVED PREVIOUSLY. HE IS CHARGED WITH TWO COUNTS OF FIRST DEGREE FELONY SEXUAL EXPLOITATION OF A MINOR. DEPUTIES ALSO FOUND OTHER LEWD MESSAGES. THEY SAY LEADING THEM TO CHARGE HIM WITH FELONY. SECRET PEEPING FOR A SEPARATE INCIDENT. THE ALAMANCE-BURLINGTON SCHOOL SYSTEM IS MOURNING THE LOSS OF TWO OF ITS STUDENTS AFTER THEY DIED IN A CAR CRASH LAST NIGHT. THE FAMILY OF 16 YEAR OLD BRANDON THIAS CONFIRMED THAT HE WAS ONE OF THE VICTIMS. BRANDON’S FAMILY SAYS HE WAS A JUNIOR AT SOUTHEASTERN ALAMANCE. THEY SAY HE WAS RESPECTFUL, FUNNY AND LOVED BEING AROUND HIS FAMILY. SECOND STUDENT HAS NOT YET BEEN PUBLICLY IDENTIFIED, ACCORDING TO HIGHWAY PATROL, JUST BEFORE 930 LAST NIGHT, THE VEHICLE THOSE TWO WERE IN TRAVELED ON AND THEN OFF THE ROAD ON OAK RIDGE CHURCH ROAD NEAR CHIPMUNK LANE IN ORANGE COUNTY BEFORE STRIKING A TREE. HIGHWAY PATROL SAYS AFTER THAT THAT THE CAR CAUGHT FIRE. THE ALAMANCE-BURLINGTON SCHOOL SYSTEM ALERTED STUDENTS THIS MORNING ABOUT THE DREADFULLY SAD NEWS, AND MADE SURE TO HAVE EXTRA SUPPORT. STAFF AND COUNSELORS AT SOUTHEAST ALAMANCE AS A PRECAUTION. THIS IS A REAL TRAGIC LOSS AND, UH, A REAL DEVASTATING BLOW TO THOSE STUDENTS AND THE STAFF MEMBERS TODAY. AND THAT’S WHY WE WANTED TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT. WE BROUGHT IN PEOPLE FROM OTHER SCHOOLS IN THE DISTRICT TO HELP OUT THOSE STUDENTS AND THE STAFF MEMBERS TODAY. HIGHWAY PATROL SAYS AT THIS POINT, IT’S STILL NOT CLEAR WHAT CAUSED THE DRIVER OF THAT CAR TO LOSE CONTROL. THE CRASH REMAINS UNDER INVESTIGATION. INFORMATION ABOUT AN AUTOPSY HAS BEEN RELEASED FROM A MAN CONVICTED IN A HIGH PROFILE CRIME IN WINSTON-SALEM. IN THE LATE 1990S, THE FORSYTH COUNTY MEDICAL EXAMINER’S OFFICE SAYS CALVIN MICHAEL SMITH’S CAUSE OF DEATH IS UNDETERMINED AND WITH NO EVIDENCE OF FOUL PLAY. SMITH WAS FOUND DEAD ON CHARLESTON COURT LAST SEPTEMBER. HE WAS CONVICTED IN THE 1997 ASSAULT ON JILL MARKER, AN EMPLOYEE AT THE FORMER SILK PLANT FOREST STORE ON PETERS CREEK PARKWAY. HE MAINTAINED HIS INNOCENCE UNTIL HE WAS RELEASED FROM PRISON IN 2016. POLICE SAY THIS CASE IS NOW CLOSED. A GREENSBORO FACILITY TO HOUSE MIGRANT CHILDREN IS SET TO OPEN UP IN ABOUT TWO WEEKS, MAYOR NANCY VAUGHAN ANNOUNCED ONLINE THAT THE GREENSBORO PIEDMONT ACADEMY INFLUX CARE FACILITY WILL OPEN ITS DOORS AND BE OPERATIONAL MARCH 15TH. SHE ADDED THAT NO CHILDREN WILL BE PLACED AT THE FACILITY AT THIS TIME. WE DO KNOW IT’S LOCATED AT THE CAMPUS OF THE FORMER AMERICAN HEBREW ACADEMY AND WILL HOUSE UNACCOMPANIED IMMIGRANT CHILDREN TEMPORARILY. THE FACILITY CAN HOLD UP TO 800 PEOPLE. THERE’S NEW COVID 19 GUIDANCE FROM THE CDC. HEALTH EXPERTS SAY COVID VACCINES ARE INCREASING IMMUNITY. THEY’VE MADE THE VIRUS LESS OF A PUBLIC HEALTH THREAT. JENN SULLIVAN HAS DETAILS ON WHAT HEALTH EXPERTS ARE NOW RECOMMENDING WHEN IT COMES TO COVID. PEOPLE WHO TEST POSITIVE FOR COVID 19 NO LONGER HAVE TO ISOLATE FOR AT LEAST FIVE DAYS, THE NEW RECOMMENDATIONS COMING FROM THE CDC FRIDAY. WE’RE IN A DIFFERENT PLACE, BOTH IN THE LEVEL OF PROTECTION PEOPLE HAVE AGAINST THESE ILLNESSES AND THE TOOLS WE HAVE AVAILABLE UNDER THE NEW GUIDELINES, THE CDC SAYS. ONCE YOUR FEVER FREE FOR 24 HOURS WITHOUT OUT THE HELP OF MEDICAL ROWAN, YOU DO NOT NEED TO ISOLATE. YOU CAN RESUME NORMAL ACTIVITIES. BUT THE CDC STILL SUGGESTS TAKING PRECAUTIONS FOR FIVE DAYS, LIKE WEARING A MASK AND LIMITING CONTACT WITH OTHERS, ESPECIALLY IF YOU STILL HAVE SYMPTOMS OR NEAR PEOPLE VULNERABLE TO SERIOUS ILLNESS. WE ARE ENCOURAGING ORGANIZATIONS TO ALLOW EMPLOYEES TO STAY HOME WHEN THEY’RE SICK. PREVIOUS GUIDELINES RECOMMENDED PEOPLE WHO HAD TESTED POSITIVE FOR COVID STAY HOME FOR AT LEAST FIVE DAYS. COVID 19 IS STILL AN IMPORTANT PUBLIC HEALTH THREAT, BUT IT IS NOT THE EMERGENCY THAT IT ONCE WAS. IN 2021, COVID WAS THE THIRD LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH IN THE U.S., BUT THE CDC SAYS LAST YEAR IT DROPPED TO 10TH AND COVID HOSPITALIZATIONS ARE DOWN. BUT HEALTH EXPERTS STILL RECOMMEND GETTING AN ANNUAL COVID SHOT, PARTICULARLY THOSE IN HIGH RISK CATEGORIES LIKE OLDER ADULTS, PEOPLE WHO ARE IMMUNO COMPROMISED, AND PREGNANT WOMEN. WE NEED TO KEEP OUR IMMUNITY UP AND STAY AHEAD OF THIS VIRUS. UPDATED COVID VACCINES ARE EXPECTED TO BE ANNOUNCED LATER THIS YEAR. JENN SULLIVAN, WPXI II, 12 NEWS. MEANWHILE, THERE ARE AT LEAST NOW 41 CASES OF MEASLES REPORTED IN 15 STATES PLUS NEW YORK CITY. THAT’S JUST 17 CASES SHORT OF WHAT WAS REPORTED DURING ALL OF LAST YEAR. SO FAR, NO CASES REPORTED IN NORTH CAROLINA. FLORIDA HAD AN OUTBREAK IN AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, LEADING TO NINE CASES IN JUST ONE COUNTY. THE REASON FOR MEASLES RETURN, LOWER VACCINATION RATES AND MORE OVERSEAS TRAVEL, ACCORDING TO THE CDC, 92% OF CHILDREN ARE VACCINATED BY THE TIME THEY ARE TWO, BUT THAT IS BELOW THE FEDERAL TARGET OF 95%.
