BIPARTISAN BORDER BILL. ONLINE SPORTS GAMBLING BECOMES LEGAL IN NORTH CAROLINA A WEEK FROM MONDAY AND TOMORROW. PEOPLE ACROSS THE STATE CAN BEGIN TO CREATE ACCOUNTS WITH ONE OF THE STATE’S NEWLY LICENSED SPORTS BOOKS. TODAY, THE STATE LOTTERY COMMISSION ANNOUNCED THAT THESE EIGHT COMPANIES WILL BE THE FIRST TO LEGALLY TAKE BETS IN OUR STATE. AMONG THEM, FANDUEL, BET, MGM AND DRAFTKINGS. MORE COMPANIES COULD RECEIVE LICENSES IN THE FUTURE. WE SPOKE WITH A CERTIFIED GAMBLING COUNSELOR TONIGHT WHO SAYS ABOUT 2 TO 3% WILL STRUGGLE. ONE OF THE MOST COMMON PROBLEM BEHAVIORS IS KNOWN AS CHASING. THAT’S BETTING MORE TOMORROW TO COVER WHAT YOU LOST TODAY. IT CAN SPIRAL OUT OF CONTROL QUICKLY AND ONE DEMOGRAPHIC IS PARTICULARLY SUSCEPTIBLE. I DO SEE IT MORE IN MY HIGH SCHOOL TO COLLEGE AGE YOUNG MEN. IF WE KEEP IN MIND THE FACT THAT THE BRAIN’S NOT REALLY DONE DEVELOPING UNTIL 2526, IT MAKES SENSE THAT THIS IS KIND OF A VULNERABLE POPULATION FOR GAMBLING DISORDER, A LOT OF THE WARNING SIGNS FOR GAMBLING DISORDER ARE VERY SIMILAR TO ALCOHOL AND SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS. SO WE SEE LOSS OF CONTROL. WE SEE PREOCCUPATION ROWAN. UM, WE SEE MAYBE REPEATED ATTEMPTS TO QUIT THAT AREN’T SUCCESSFUL. ALL DOCTOR AUSLANDER ADDS, YOU DON’T HAVE TO LOSE A LOT OF MONEY TO HAVE A PROBLEM NECESSARILY. IT CAN OFTEN BE HOW MUCH TIME YOU DEVOTE. AND ONE OF THE BIG CHALLENGES WITH SPORTS GAMBLING IS WHEN THE TEAM OR PLAYER YOU’RE BETTING ON ISN’T ACTIVELY PLAYING. YOU CAN STILL SPEND HOURS AND HOURS DOING RESEARCH. We’re just 11 days away from the start of sports betting in North Carolina and we will be working every day between now and then to see that our launch is a successful one.”Under the Commission’s Sports Wagering Authorization, those 21 and older can use their computer, phone, or other electronics to place bets beginning at noon on March 11.One of the most common problem behaviors is "chasing." That's when someone bets more to cover what they've lost, and it can spiral out of control quickly. One demographic is particularly susceptible.Dr. Jessica Auslander, a certified gambling expert, said "I do see it more in my high school to college age young men. If we keep in mind the fact that the brain's not really done developing until 25 or 26, it makes sense that this is kind of a vulnerable population for gambling disorders. A lot of warning signs for gambling disorders are very similar to alcohol and substance abuse disorders, so we see loss of control, preoccupation. Nine applications were submitted to the Commission for operator licenses, and more approvals are expected in the future. As of February 29, the Commission has also issued three full licenses for sports wagering suppliers, 20 provisional supplier licenses, and three sports wagering service provider licenses. A list of all licensees can be found on the Commission’s website.
