Rossen Reports: Is pet insurance worth it? We're finding out
Our pets are members of our families and now reports show a growing number of us are choosing to buy pet insurance for them, too. One of our Rossen Reports viewers reached out to us, asking whether pet insurance is worth it. So we did some digging. What is pet insurance? Basically, if you look into it, you’ll notice that pet insurance will use a lot of the same lingo our health insurance does. Pet insurance is a plan you pay into on a monthly or annual basis in exchange for reimbursement of eligible veterinary expenses. For most, after you reach a deductible, the pet insurer will reimburse you for a percentage of your expenses or pay your vet directly. What’s covered and not covered? This is dependent on what kind of insurance you plan on getting. Most plans cover things like accidents (swallowing something), injuries (broken bones), illnesses, tests, surgeries, etc. What’s typically not covered? Cosmetic procedures (like ear cropping), grooming, pre-existing conditions that your pet had before the policy started, etc. When it comes to routine visits, it really depends on your coverage. They aren’t always covered but a lot of pet insurers offer wellness coverage plans as add-ons if your insurance doesn’t cover vet visits. What’s the cost? Reports show the average premium for dogs is about $53 per month and $32 per month for cats. But costs vary based on a few things: the type of pet you’re insuring, the breed, their health history, even their age. (Older pets tend to cost more to insure!)Is it worth it?Experts say there are a few factors that you can think about to determine if pet insurance is worth it to you. It’s worth it if your pet is young and healthy, you don’t have a lot in your savings to cover a large vet bill if something happens, and/or having insurance gives you peace of mind. It might NOT be worth it if your pet is older and has health issues and/or a big vet bill would not be a financial burden for you.Where can I get pet insurance? Here are some of the top-rated ones:Healthy PawsEmbraceFetchSpotASPCA**Have a question for Jeff Rossen?
