THAN SEVEN DECADES OF LOVE. RIGHT NOW AT 4:00, AT&T SAYS SERVICE HAS BEEN RESTORED FOR ALL CUSTOMERS. MORE THAN 70,000 CUSTOMERS NATIONWIDE REPORTED HAVING NO SERVICE OR INTERNET THIS MORNING. THE COMPANY JUST MINUTES AGO SAID THE SERVICE HAS BEEN RESTORED FOR ALL OF THOSE IMPACTED. OTHER PROVIDERS. INCLUDING VERIZON, T-MOBILE AND CRICKET WIRELESS, HAVE ALSO REPORTED OUTAGES, AND IT’S IMPORTANT TO NOTE HERE THAT EMERGENCY SERVICES IN OUR AREA SAID THEIR LINES WERE STILL OPERATIONAL DURING THE AT&T OUTAGE. LEADERS IN YADKIN COUNTY HAVE SINCE STATIONED EMERGENCY VEHICLES IN DIFFERENT LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY. IN CASE PEOPLE CAN’T GET THROUGH TO EMS AND THOSE SPOTS INCLUDE GEORGE STREET AND YADKINVILLE. EAST BEND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND HIGHWAY 6601 AND 67. THERE IN BOONVILLE. LET’S GO TO ALAMANCE COUNTY TONIGHT. A MAJOR DEVELOPMENT IN THE COUNTY. THE SCHOOL DISTRICT MAY SOON FIND ITSELF WITH MILLIONS OF DOLLARS BACK IN ITS POCKET, BUT IT COULD COME AT A COST FOR STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES. JOSHUA DAVIS IS IN BURLINGTON, BREAKING DOWN THE SUPERINTENDENT’S PROPOSAL. DOCTOR DANE BUTLER’S PROPOSAL IS THE USE OF FEDERAL FUNDS STEMMING FROM THE PANDEMIC TO FILL IN THE GAPS FOR THEIR LOCAL BUDGET. SOME OF THOSE FUNDS WERE BEING USED FOR THE DISTRICT’S VIRTUAL SCHOOL. IN TOTAL, THE PROPOSAL MEANS THE DISTRICT WOULD GET BACK ROUGHLY $4.6 MILLION, SUSTAINING THEM THROUGH JUNE 30TH. THE SUPERINTEND SAYS THE RECOMMENDATION WILL ALLOW EMPLOYEES TO REMAIN IN THEIR CURRENT POSITIONS, PREVENTING A PLAN THAT WOULD HAVE IMPACTED. SALARIES, EMPLOYMENT CONTRACTS AND VARIOUS NON-CLASSROOM POSITIONS. IT ALSO SAVES DUAL LANGUAGE PROGRAMS, BUT THIS ALL MEANS THE BOARD WOULD HAVE TO CLOSE THE DISTRICT’S VIRTUAL SCHOOL AT THE END OF THIS SCHOOL YEAR. THE VIRTUAL SCHOOL SERVES MORE THAN 200 KIDS AND EMPLOYS AROUND 30 PEOPLE, LESS. ATKINS, A SPOKESPERSON WITH THE SCHOOL, SAYS IF THE SUPERINTENDENT’S PROPOSAL GOES INTO EFFECT, THE DISTRICT WILL HELP PARENTS AND STUDENTS AT THE VIRTUAL SCHOOL THROUGH THE TRANSITION. WE WILL BE WORKING WITH THEM TO OFFER TOURS IN OUR TRADITIONAL BRICK AND MORTAR SCHOOLS. THEY’LL HAVE OPPORTUNITIES TO MEET YOU KNOW, THEIR NEW PRINCIPAL. HOWEVER, ONE PARENT I SPOKE TO SAYS SHE’S UPSET ABOUT WHAT THIS COULD MEAN FOR HER SON, WHO SHE SAYS HAS BEEN FLOURISHING AT THE VIRTUAL SCHOOL. I WOULD HAVE TO LOOK INTO OTHER AREAS AS FAR AS IF THERE’S A VIRTUAL OPTION OR JUST HOME SCHOOLING OPTIONS. UM, THERE ARE OTHER OPTIONS OUT THERE, SO WE DON’T HAVE TO FEEL LIKE WE’RE STUCK WITH ALAMANCE BURLINGTON SCHOOL SYSTEM. SO WE WILL MAKE THE CHOICES THAT WE NEED TO MAKE. WE’LL JUST WE’LL MOVE FORWARD AND DOCTOR BUTLER WILL RECOMMEND THIS PLAN TO THE BOARD OF EDUCATION AT A SPECIAL MEETING ON FRIDAY AT 1 P.M. IN BURLINGTON. I’M JOSHUA DAVIS FOR WXII 12 NEWS. JOSHUA.
