This collection pays tribute to the forgotten era of basketball
Just like baseball, there were all-Black basketball teams that played before racial integration. This era, known as the “Black Fives Era” spanned from 1904 through 1950. The all-Black basketball squads were often known as colored quints or black fives, referring to the five starting players in a lineup, according to The Black Fives Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Greenwich, Connecticut. While a league never existed like baseball’s Negro Leagues, the teams that played in places like New York City, Pittsburgh, Omaha and Chicago helped shape the game and open doors for future generations of Black basketball players. Among the notable players that participated in the Black Fives era included Jackie Robinson, Chris Dorsey, John Isaacs and Charles ‘Tarzan’ Cooper, who was notably the first African American player to be inducted as an individual to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1977. This legacy has been honored in a clothing collection by Ohio-based apparel company Homage called The Black Fives Collection. “The pioneering teams of the Black Fives Era not only elevated but shaped the game we know and love today," said Ryan Vesler, founder and CEO, of HOMAGE. “Our hope is that this collection resonates with younger generations, spurring interest and conversation in the Black Fives that continues for years to come.”The vintage-inspired t-shirt collection features the team logos of the teams that played during the Black Fives era, and the partnership will benefit the Black Fives Foundation in its pursuit to preserve and teach the once-forgotten history. “Apparel is a language of its own, so these outspoken vintage graphics will start conversations,” said Black Fives Foundation founder Claude Johnson, a historian and award-winning author of “The Black Fives: The Epic Story of Basketball’s Forgotten Era.” The collection features a selection of 16 teams, which are listed below, including a link to each apparel.
