But other gadgets like binoculars, telescopes or even a camera can be used. Now, it’s worth noting that experts say you don’t need these to see a total solar eclipse. A pair of eclipse glasses or a handheld solar viewing device are just fine, but magnification does enhance the view of the eclipse, so if you want to see sunspots and finer details of the eclipse, binoculars or telescopes do the trick. In order to view an eclipse safely, binoculars, cameras and telescopes need specific solar filters. Those filters are sold separately and can be used for a device you already own, which means you don’t have to break the bank on a separate pair of specialized binoculars or telescopes. So where can you get one? Just like with eclipse glasses, don’t just get these filters from anywhere. Counterfeit items or filters that aren’t conducive for solar viewing can result in eye damage, so we want to avoid that. The American Astronomical Society had a list of reputable sources that produce solar filters that will not only protect your eyes, but give you a great view of the solar eclipse through the device of your choosing. Not only that, but the brand also makes a pair of binoculars that are safe to use for viewing the sun whenever you’d like. Lastly, Celestron also sells a telescope that comes with a filter for eclipse viewing. B&H Photo & Video, an electronics retailer based in New York City, was on the society’s list as a reputable place to get solar filters for not just telescopes, but especially cameras in case you want to capture the eclipse on a camera. Some items we found include this solar filter that can be equipped for your camera for under $100, a pack of solar eclipse glasses that come with two solar filters, and this solar filter for a telescope under $70. One last thing: your smartphone. You can equip a smartphone with a solar filter, and there were three recommendations by the American Astronomical Society. Solar Snap - It’s a filter that fastens to your camera lens and the kit also comes with a smartphone app specially designed to customize, save and share images you take of the eclipse. Best part? It’s under $15 and comes with two pairs of solar eclipse glasses. SafeShot - You can attach your smartphone to a 3M attachment so that your phone’s camera is then connected to a built-in solar filter to safely capture photos and view the eclipse. Cellphone Solar Viewer from Solares - This product comes with two solar filters and is made of a lightweight cardboard.Remember, it’s always safety first when viewing the sun, especially during an eclipse, but these items can help you safely capture the moment or enhance your viewing experience.
