'We need toys:' Toys for Tots in Winston-Salem in need of donations ahead of Christmas
THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF TOYS FOR TOTS CHAPTERS ACROSS THE US AND THE ONE IN WINSTON-SALEM SAYS IT NEEDS DONATIONS THIS HOLIDAY SEASON. WXII 12. S MARIA DEBONE SPOKE WITH THE MARINE CORPS LEAGUE OF WINSTON-SALEM ABOUT HOW PEOPLE CAN STEP IN AND HELP. WELL, RIGHT NOW, THE MARINE CORPS LEAGUE OF WINSTON-SALEM AND VOLUNTEERS ARE WORKING NONSTOP HERE, GATHERED TOY DONATIONS, ORGANIZING THEM AND PACKING THEM UP, ALL TO DELIVER TO KIDS. THEY ARE LOW RIGHT NOW AS FAR AS DONATIONS GO, COMPARED TO LAST YEAR. LAST YEAR, THEY COLLECTED 75,000 TOYS TO DISTRIBUTE TO OVER 35,000 CHILDREN IN FORSYTH COUNTY. AND SURROUNDING AND WITH THE NEED GREATER THIS YEAR, THEY NEED HELP. LUIS PLEASANTS LEADS THE EFFORT EVERY YEAR AND SAYS THEY TRY AND GIVE TWO NICE TOYS. A BOOK AND A STOCKING STUFFER TO EACH CHILD RANGING FROM AGES 1 TO 12 YEARS OF AGE. I MEAN, SOMETHING THAT OUR MARINE CORPS LEAGUE IS VERY PROUD TO DO. WE REALLY ARE WE IT TUG YOUR HEARTSTRINGS. The Marine Corps League of Winston-Salem said they need a lot more donations for their Toys for Tots campaign. “Things are down from last year, yes, but we're going to make it happen, we’re Marines," Lewis Pleasants, the commandant of the Marine Corps League of Winston-Salem, said.Last year, the Marine Corps League of Winston-Salem collected 75,000 toys to distribute to over 35,000 children in Forsyth County and surrounding through the Toys for Tots Campaign.With the need greater this year, they need help. "The need is always there. It seems to intensify every year, continues to grow. I think now that the program has attained the level of success that it has, more and more people are applying for assistance. And we're seeing it greater now than we've ever seen it," Pleasants said.Pleasants said they try to give two nice toys, a book, and a stocking stuffer to each child, ranging from one to 12 years of age."We need bicycles, we need toys. We need contributions that we can turn into toys. So anything that anyone would like to do, we're we're most appreciative of it," Pleasants said.Pleasants added, "Let's just put a smile on a kid's face and as many kids as we can."If you want to donate a toy, a monetary donation, or your time, you can come down to the warehouse. They're in the old Sears auto repair shop building in the Hanes Mall parking lot, or you can reach out to them on the Toys for Tots website.Donations can be dropped off at the warehouse by Dec. 21.Pleasants said, "The sooner, the better."
