CHRIS PETERSEN MADE THE TREK TO FROSTY’S CHOOSE AND CUT IN WEST JEFFERSON TO FIND OUT WHAT IT TAKES TO GROW THAT TREE. SANTAS SURROUNDS WITH PRESENTS. PATIENCE AND COLD WET WEATHER ARE THE PERFECT INGREDIENTS FOR GROWING THAT TREE GOING UP IN YOUR LIVING ROOM THIS HOLIDAY SEASON, FOLKS ARE MERRY AND BRIGHT AT FROSTY’S CHOOSING. CUT IN WEST JEFFERSON. IT’S LIKE A CIRCUS. IT’S LIKE DISNEY WORLD FOR CHRISTMAS. IT’S LIKE KIDS ARE LETTING SANTA KNOW IF THEY’VE BEEN NAUGHTY OR NICE. AND THE SOUNDS OF THE SEASON FILL THE AIR FOR FAMILIES ARE BRANCHING OUT ACROSS THIS 200 ACRE FARM TO FIND THE PERFECT TREE. WHETHER THAT’S SOMETHING TREE MENDOUS OR MORE OF THE CHARLIE BROWN VARIETY PATIENCE, TEAMWORK AND FUN. MATTHEW SEXTON AND HIS FAMILY HAVE OWNED THIS CHRISTMAS TREE FARM SINCE 1960. WE’RE THE FOURTH GENERATION TREE FARMERS, SEXTON SAYS. THERE’S A LOT OF TIME INVOLVED IN GROWING THOSE BRIGHT GREEN LEAVES WITH WITH FESTIVE CHEER THAT BRING US HOPE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. IT’S A LONGER PROCESS THAN PEOPLE UNDERSTAND, BUT IT TAKES IT TAKES IT TAKES A WHILE. THE AVERAGE TREE TAKES 3 TO 4 YEARS TO GROW FROM A SEED TO A FOOT TALL. FROM THERE, THEY GROW ANOTHER FOOT EVERY YEAR. NOW, I’M NOT VERY GOOD AT MATH, BUT THAT MEANS THE SEVEN FOOTER YOU PUT IN YOUR HOME TOOK ABOUT TEN YEARS TO GROW. YOU CAN PUT SOME ORNAMENTS ON IT. YEAH. YEAH, OF COURSE. THE SEXTON’S ARE CONSTANTLY MONITORING THE WEATHER. DROUGHT LIKE CONDITIONS CAN DRASTICALLY REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF GROWTH FOR THESE FRASER FIRS ONE YEAR YOU MIGHT GET A FOOT OF GROWING LIKE I SAID EARLIER, AND THIS YEAR, YOU KNOW, MIGHT ONLY BE SIX INCHES. IT’S JUST YOU WAIT TILL WAIT AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS. OH, CHRISTMAS TREE. OH CHRISTMAS TREE. HOW LOVELY ARE YOUR BRANCHES? BUT FOR HOW LONG. THAT DEPENDS ON IF YOU’RE WATERING IT PROPERLY. SEXTON SAYS IT TAKES A GALLON OF WATER A DAY TO KEEP THEM FROM DRYING OUT. IT’S IMPORTANT TO CUT THE CUT JUST A LITTLE CHUNK OFF THE BOTTOM TO GET THAT FRESH BOTTOM ON IT TO WHERE WHENEVER YOU PUT IT IN THE STAND AND PUT WATER IN IT, IT’LL SOAK THE MOISTURE UP. SEXTON ALSO SAYS THAT FOR EVERY TREE THEY CUT DOWN, THEY PLANT TWO MORE. SO IT TRULY IS A GREE
