A large brush fire continues to burn in Henderson County, North Carolina. It shows heavy smoke blanketing Western North Carolina.See below for the latest updates as we learn more: Monday9:30 a.m. update from Henderson County:"Fire Department, Emergency Management and N.C. Forest Service personnel continue to work to control the brush fire in the East Poplar and Kyles Creek Road area of Henderson County."Conditions did improve overnight, so no change this morning. The N.C. Forest Service estimates the fire is 431 acres and is 5% contained. Fire Departments are focusing on structure protection, as the N.C. Forest Services is focusing on putting in the fire lines."Upon further assessment by the N.C. Forest Service Sunday there have been a total of 1 home damaged, 2 homes destroyed, 1 outbuilding destroyed, and 1 uninhabited cabin destroyed."The cause of the fire is unknown and currently under investigation. There are no injuries."Due to increased fire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits for Henderson County effective 5 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 5, until further notice."Henderson County declared a State of Emergency effective at 7:00 p.m., Sunday, November 5, in support of our partner Volunteer Fire Departments and the Sheriff’s Office. The declaration will give the County the tools needed to protect life and property. It will also provide the opportunity to seek additional State and Federal resources to support the County's partner agencies"Fire officials thank the public for the donations received thus far. At this current time, there are no immediate needs. A donations drop-off location has been established at Fruitland Baptist Church in their fellowship hall, 150 College Street, Hendersonville. We still encourage the public to avoid the area if you don’t live in the immediate area."7 a.m. Monday update:An air quality alert continues until midnight for Henderson and Graham counties as a result of wildfire smoke. Haywood, Jackson, and Swain counties above 4,000 feet are also included. Winds will shift from the north to the southwest today driving the smoke away from the Upstate. Highs will be well above normal today.Sunday4:00 p.m. update:"The N.C. Forest Service just updated their numbers to 431 acres and 5% contained."3:15 p.m. update:"Poplar Drive Fire Update: Fire Department, Emergency Management and N.C. Forest Service personnel continue to work to control the brush fire in the East Poplar and Kyles Creek Road area of Henderson County."The Forest Service is continuing to access the fire and an additional update will be provided to the community regarding the size and the containment of the fire. Fire officials have identified 75 structures that are in the current fire containment zone. Fire Departments are focusing on structure protection, as the N.C. Forest Services is focusing on putting in the fire lines."So far, three structures have been heavily damaged as a result of the fire.Property owners from the affected areas may come to the Fruitland Baptist Church at 5pm for a briefing from officials."The cause of the fire is unknown and currently under investigation. Forest Service is strongly urging the public to postpone any and all outdoor burning."Fire officials thank the public for the donations received thus far. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits for Burke, Cherokee, Clay, Cleveland, Gaston, Graham, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, McDowell, Polk, Rutherford, Swain and Transylvania counties effective 5 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 5, until further notice.“Several counties in Western North Carolina are currently in a severe drought, and we are seeing wildfire activity increase due to dry conditions. Because dry conditions are expected to continue this burn ban is necessary to reduce the risk of fires starting and spreading quickly. Our top priority is always to protect lives, property and forestland across the state,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “Even though not all areas of the North Carolina fall under the burn ban, we do encourage extreme caution with any burning as conditions are dry in many areas of the state. We will continue to assess conditions in the coming weeks to determine if we need to expand the burn ban.”"Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire."Local fire departments and law enforcement officers are assisting the N.C. Two homes and an outbuilding have been lost, while another home sustained minimal damage.Henderson County Sheriff's Office and Henderson County Emergency management have implemented evacuations for at least 34 structures that are threatened from the fire.The N.C. Forest Service is providing a scout plane and helicopter. Officials added firefighting personnel will continue establishing containment lines, conducting strategic firing operation and providing structure protection.Officials say the cause of the fire is still unknown and is under investigation. There are no injuries.9:00 a.m. update:The N.C. Forest Service said the fire has now taken over 250 acres in the Edneyville community, and only 5% of it is contained. Officials also said the fire has destroyed two home and one outbuilding, but no injuries have been reported. Buncombe County officials also issue a burn ban due to the "adverse atmospheric condition." The conditions include high fire danger, low humidity, and strong gusty winds.The ban will not allow the burning of yard waste, debris, or land clearing. The ban does not include fires contained in a pit, a chiminea device smaller than three feet in diameter, and a barbecue grill.The burn ban will remain in effect until conditions improve.8:00 a.m. update:The Henderson County Sheriff's Office has released the following update."Firefighters were able to hold the fires within most of the lines overnight, however, containment was lost in a few of the areas. We will continue to update you throughout the day."3:45 a.m update:The Henderson County Sheriff's Office has issued a voluntary evacuation for E Poplar Dr. This is in reference to the wildfire in that area. The evacuation is voluntary but highly recommended.Saturday9 p.m. update:"Due to hazardous fire conditions an outdoor burning ban is in effect for Henderson County as of November 4th at 9PM. Under authority of the Henderson County Code, Section 78-16.1 all outdoor burning is prohibited in areas within 100 feet of a structure.The Henderson County burning ban shall remain in effect until conditions improve and the ban is cancelled." 5:00 p.m. update: From N.C. Forest Service: The Poplar Drive Fire burning in the Edneyville area is around 175 in size and is 5% contained. Firefighters are establishing containment lines, and N.C. Forest Service personnel are responding to the incident. So far, one outbuilding was destroyed and 36 structures in the area are threatened.No official evacuations have been ordered for residents in the area at this time. 2:55 p.m. update:From Henderson County officials: "Local Fire Department units and the North Carolina Forest Service partners continue to work to control the brush fire in the East Poplar Road and Kyles Creek Road area. At this time the fire is estimated to be 200 acres, with less than 10% containment. At this time no residences have been destroyed, no injuries have been reported. Two structures have sustained minimal damage. Crews continue to construct fire lines and protect structures which are exposed. Edneyville Fire Department is being supported by Fire Departments from Henderson, Buncombe, Transylvania and Polk Counties. Many are walking outside and smelling and seeing the smoke. Sky 4 is headed to that area now. 12 p.m. update from McDowell County officials: A dry air mass will remain in place over the region today. Weather conditions are favorable for wildfire potential to spread quickly in the North Carolina mountains and the northern Upstate of South Carolina. Dry vegetation, leaf litter, warm temperatures, and critical relative humidity levels from 15 to 25 percent are expected this afternoon.Any fires that develop may spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended. Please refer to your local burn permitting authorities on whether you can burn. If you do burn, use extreme caution since fires can quickly get out of hand under these conditions. 10 a.m. update: According to Edneyville Fire and Rescue's Facebook page, fire conditions from Friday's wildfire changed early Saturday morning. Structures in the Cairn Court and Morril Drive area are threatened. Emergency workers ask that you stay away from those areas. Edneyville and Fletcher's first responders are on the scene.The town of Tryon sent out a message Saturday morning to its residents, reading:"Due to extremely low humidity, extraordinarily dry conditions, and lack of potential rainfall, PLEASE kindly REFRAIN from ANY and ALL outdoor burning at this time at the request of the Tryon Fire Department."Also, for informational purposes, Henderson Co is currently dealing with a very large brush/wildland fire that has already consumed one residential structure. They have requested mutual aid from a multitude of area departments.
