KARA PETERS WAS AT THAT MEETING. SHE IS LIVE NOW WITH A RECAP OF THE MEETING AND THE CONCERNS THAT WERE RAISED TONIGHT. KARA. YEAH, CHRISTINE, THAT’S RIGHT. TONIGHT WE SAW HUNDREDS COME OUT TO VOICE THEIR CONCERNS HERE AT ELLESBOROUGH BAPTIST CHURCH, MANY LEAVING WITH SIGNS THAT READ IN BIG AND BOLD. NO CASINO. I’M HERE TO SAY NO TO THE REZONING. RESIDENTS IN OPPOSITION FOR WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS FOR NEARLY 200 ACRES OF LAND OFF HIGHWAY 220 IN ROCKINGHAM COUNTY. WHILE THE USE OF LAND ISN’T SPECIFIED AND ALL EYES ARE ON RECENT PUSHES FOR CASINO LEGISLATION, I HAVE TALKED TO SOME OF THE BOTH HOUSE REPRESENTATIVES, REPRESENTATIVES AND THE STATE SENATORS THERE. THEY BELIEVE THAT CASINOS ARE GOOD LONG TERM, BUT THE BIG POINT THAT ROCKINGHAM COUNTY IS MAKING TONIGHT IS THE LOCATION ELON HUNDREDS POURING IN TO EXPRESS OPPOSITION TO THE DEVELOPMENT. MANY MENTIONING THE POSSIBILITY FOR CRIME AS WELL AS ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS. SOME HOPING WHATEVER IS NEEDED TO BRING IN MORE REVENUE TO THE COUNTY CAN BE READING COLLECTED SOMEWHERE ELSE. INSTEAD. THAT CAN BE DONE THROUGH FACTORY WELLNESS CLINICS, GROCERY STORES, ANY FORM OF EMPLOYMENT THAT WILL ATTRACT JOBS AND CITIZENS TO MOVE HERE AND WORK. ONE HUGE CONCERN WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO A WELL KNOWN CAMP THAT HAS SERVED KIDS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS AND ILLNESSES FOR NEARLY 40 YEARS. THIS CAMP IS NECESSARY, AND THIS CAMP HAS BEEN A GOOD CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT IN OUR COMMUNITY. OUR KIDS ARE SAFE. THE PARENTS DON’T WORRY. ELECTED LOCAL, STATE AND FEDERAL OFFICIALS WHO SERVED THE COUNTY WERE INVITED TO ATTEND THE MEETING. ROCKINGHAM COUNTY SHERIFF SAM PAGE WAS AMONG THOSE PRESENT WHO ALSO OPPOSED THE REZONING REQUEST. IN MY OPINION, NOTHING GOOD WILL COME FROM ESTABLISHING A CASINO IN ROCKINGHAM COUNTY OR IN THE STATE. BUT. BUT THINGS ASSOCIATED GAMBLING, WE WILL SEE SOME GOOD AND WE’RE GOING TO SEE SOME BAD. AND THE ROCKINGHAM COUNTY COMMISSIONERS ARE EXPECTED TO VOTE ON THIS PROPOSED REZONING REQUEST AUGUST 21ST.
