AND HOW YOU CAN HELP FEED HUNGRY FAMILIES ACROSS THE PIEDMONT TRIAD. GOOD MORNING. WE ARE SO GLAD YOU ARE WAKING UP EARLY WITH US ON THIS WEDNESDAY, MAY 24TH. I’M AUDREY BIESK AND I’M JACKIE PASCALE. WE’RE GOING TO CHECK IN WITH DAVONTE MCKENITH IN JUST A LITTLE BIT AGAIN WITH HOW YOU CAN HELP FILL THE SHELVES OF SECOND HARVEST FOOD BANK. FIRST UP THOUGH, IS OUR FORECAST. BRIAN SLOCUM IS STANDING BY WITH THE FIRST CHECK OF A NICE DAY FOR PEOPLE TO GET OUTSIDE. BRIAN, IT IS A LITTLE COOL THIS SUMMER. I COULDN’T HELP NOTICE THAT DEVANTE IS WEARING A JACKET OUT THERE. GOOD CALL. MY FRIEND. WE DO HAVE A FEW BREAKS IN THE CLOUD COVER, BUT PRETTY OVERCAST SKY AS WE TAKE A LOOK AT THE WINSTON-SALEM SKYLINE FROM THE VANTAGE POINT OF OUR STUDIO THIS MORNING, TEMPERATURES IS KIND OF SETTLING INTO THE LOW TO MID 50S. THIS MORNING. THE CLOUDS IN PLACE ARE ACTUALLY KEEPING IT FROM GETTING COOLER THAN THAT. SOME 40S IN THE MOUNTAINS, BUT MOSTLY LOW TO MID 50S IN ALL ZONES. FIRST THING THIS MORNING, CLOUDS ARE MOST EXTENSIVE IN THE TRIAD. YOU SEE A FEW BLUE BLIPS POPPING UP FROM TIME TO TIME. IT’S MORE AT CLOUD LEVEL THAN ACTUALLY GETTING TO THE GROUND. THE AIR IS FAIRLY DRY. WE’RE ON THE EDGE OF THE CLOUD COVER IN THE MOUNTAINS. I THINK THEY’LL SEE MORE SUNSHINE. THEY’RE STILL UNSETTLED OVER THE SOUTH AND BECOMING INCREASINGLY UNSETTLED WITH A COASTAL LOW SCHEDULED TO DEVELOP OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. NOW, NOT UNLIKE YESTERDAY, WE’LL START OUT WITH SOME CLOUD COVER. WE’LL SEE SOME SUNSHINE AND INTERVALS INTO THE AFTERNOON. COULD EVEN SEE A SUNNIER WINDOW BY LATE AFTERNOON OR EARLY IN THE EVENING. NORTHEAST WINDS REMAIN BRISK AT ABOUT 10 TO 15MPH. HIGH TEMPERATURE SHOULD BE SOMEWHERE IN THE MID 70S. LATER THIS AFTERNOON, THAT COOL FLOW OF AIR WILL GIVE WAY TO MORE CHILLY AIR MOVING IN LATER ON THIS WEEK. THIS WILL LOWER TEMPERATURES JUST A COUPLE OF DEGREES. AND WHILE THAT’S HAPPENING, THE COASTAL LOW NEAR FLORIDA IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP, STRENGTHEN AND MOVE NORTHWARD AND INCREASING THE WINDS, THE CLOUDS AND LOWERING OUR TEMPERATURES. THIS WEEKEND. AND BY THE WAY, IT WILL LIKELY BRING US SOME OCCASIONAL SHOWERS, TOO. WE’LL TAKE YOU THROUGH THAT WEEKEND FORECAST TO HELP YOU PLAN THINGS OUT. THAT’S COMING UP SOON. HAPPENING NOW, PART OF A BUSY ROAD IN GREENSBORO IS BACK OPEN THIS MORNING FOR YOUR MORNING COMMUTE FOLLOWING THE CRASH. THIS IS GUILFORD COLLEGE ROAD THAT WAS SHUT DOWN FOR NEARLY THREE HOURS WHILE POLICE WERE INVESTIGATING THE CRASH. AND WE DO A VIDEO OF THAT SCENE. THIS IS BETWEEN HORNADAY AND BRAMBLE GATE ROADS RIGHT OFF OF I-40. POLICE TELL US THE CRASH HAPPENED SHORTLY AFTER MIDNIGHT. DISPATCHERS SAY EMS DID RESPOND TO THE SCENE. AS YOU CAN CLEARLY SEE HERE, BUT IT’S STILL UNKNOWN IF ANYONE WAS TAKEN TO A HOSPITAL. OFFICERS HAVE NOT SAID HOW MANY CARS WERE INVOLVED OR WHAT LED UP TO THE CRASH. GUILFORD COLLEGE ROAD REOPENED JUST AFTER 3 A.M. THIS MORNING. TODAY MARKS ONE YEAR SINCE THE HORRIFIC SCHOOL SHOOTING IN UVALDE, TEXAS. AN 18 YEAR OLD GUNMAN WITH A SEMIAUTOMATIC ASSAULT RIFLE WALKED INTO ROBB ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND OPENED FIRE, KILLING 19 STUDENTS AND TWO TEACHERS FOR MANY OF US, IT WAS THE FIRST TIME WE’D EVER HEARD OF THE SMALL TOWN OF UVALDE, ADDING IT TO THE LIST OF MASS SHOOTINGS ACROSS OUR COUNTRY. NOW, ONE YEAR LATER, THE COMMUNITY IS STILL GRIEVING AND SEARCHING FOR ANSWERS. MANY FAMILIES OF THE VICTIMS SAY THE PAIN OF THEIR LOSS IS STILL OVERWHELMING. THEY SAY THEIR AGONY IS MAGNIFIED BY A SLOW MOVING INVESTIGATION. A LACK OF ACCOUNTABILITY FOR THE FAILED POLICE RESPONSE TO THE SHOOTING AND THE FAILURE OF THE TEXAS LEGISLATURE TO PASS STRICTER GUN LAWS IN THE WAKE OF THE MASSACRE. EVERYBODY WILL SAY, OH, GUNS DON’T KILL PEOPLE, PEOPLE KILL PEOPLE. BUT WE’RE ALLOWING THESE PEOPLE TO USE THESE GUNS TO MURDER PEOPLE. AND IT DOESN’T MAKE ANY SENSE. IT ALMOST FEELS LIKE TIME STANDS STILL FOR SOMEBODY. MAY 24TH HAS. YOU CAN’T, AS THE FAMILIES OURSELVES, OF COURSE, SOME COMMUNITY MEMBERS, THERE’S NO MOVING. THERE’S NO MOVING ON. AND TEXAS GOVERNOR GREG ABBOTT ORDERED FLAGS TO FLY AT HALF STAFF ACROSS THE STATE TODAY. HE IS CALLING FOR A MOMENT OF SILENCE. AT 1130 THIS MORNING. THAT’S THE TIME THE ATTACK TOOK PLACE. THE MASS SHOOTING SPURRED SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN THE PIEDMONT TRIAD TO MAKE SURE CLASSROOMS ARE SAFE. THE WINSTON-SALEM FORSYTH COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION VOTED UNANIMOUSLY LAST NIGHT TO BRING IN MORE METAL DETECTORS TO MIDDLE SCHOOLS. OFFICIALS PLAN TO PURCHASE 94 DETECTORS TO INCREASE RANDOM SCREENINGS. THE APPROVAL FOR MORE SECURITY WILL ALLOW THE DISTRICT TO NOT MOVE THE METAL DETECTORS. THEY ALREADY HAVE, BUT ALSO HAVE ENOUGH FOR ATHLETIC FACILITIES TO. IF YOU LOOK AT 30 SCHOOLS, 15 HIGH SCHOOL, 15 MIDDLE SCHOOL, THAT’S A ROUGH ESTIMATE. THAT PUTS ABOUT SIX IN EACH SCHOOL. AND SO WITH THE STADIUMS, WE HAVE A LITTLE LESS. AND I TOLD YOU AS FAR AS SCHOOL NUMBERS. SO THIS GIVES US A SUFFICIENT NUMBER TO USE AT AT STANDALONE STADIUM. THE ADDITIONAL METAL DETECTORS WILL BE IN PLACE AND READY TO GO BY THE START OF NEXT SCHOOL YEAR. THE GREENSBORO CITY COUNCIL HAS PASSED SOME NEW RULES FOR SHORT TERM RENTALS. THE COUNCIL VOTED UNANIMOUSLY ON THESE REGULATIONS LAST NIGHT FOLLOWING A TWO HOUR HEARING, AND THESE WILL IMPACT SERVICES LIKE AIRBNB AND VRBO. THERE ARE NOW LIMITS ON THE NUMBER OF VISITORS ALLOWED. PROPERTY OWNERS ARE NOW REQUIRED TO OBTAIN A ZONING PERMIT AND RENTERS ARE ON
