TAYLORSVILLE. A DEADLY FIRE IS UNDER INVESTIGATION TONIGHT IN THE CITY OF WINSTON-SALEM. FIREFIGHTERS DISCOVERED A BODY INSIDE A TOWNHOME ON SUMMER HEIGHTS DRIVE, AND THAT IS OFF SOUTH PEACEHAVEN ROAD, NOT FAR FROM HIGHWAY 421. WPXI 12, MARIA DEBONE JOINS US LIVE AT THE SCENE WITH MORE. MARIA. YEAH, WELL, YOU CAN JUST SEE THE DAMAGE DONE TO THE BACK SIDE OF THESE TOWNHOMES WHEN FIRE CREWS ARRIVED ON THE SCENE AROUND 11 LAST NIGHT, ALL THEY COULD SEE WAS JUST THE BUILDING ENGULFED IN FLAMES. WE DO HAVE HEAVY SMOKE AND FLAMES VISIBLE FROM THE CHARLIE SIDE. WE’RE GOING TO BE HERE. THE AGGRESSIVE ATTACK MODE, OFFENSIVE ATTACK MODE. THIS IS VIDEO OF WINSTON-SALEM FIRE CREWS FIRST ARRIVING ON SCENE AROUND 11 MONDAY NIGHT. THEY SAY IT TOOK ABOUT. 15 MINUTES TO GET THE FLAMES UNDER CONTROL. SOMEONE STARTED YELLING FIRE AFTER THEY RAPIDLY RAYMOND DOORBELL FIREFIGHTER SAID AFTER GETTING THE FIRE UNDER CONTROL, THEY FOUND 76 YEAR OLD PAUL RUTLEDGE DEAD INSIDE HIS UNIT. THAT UNIT HAS THE MOST EXTENSIVE DAMAGE OUT OF THE FIVE TOTAL THERE. THREE PEOPLE ARE NOW DISPLACED, INCLUDING ANDREW KIGER, WHO JUST MOVED IN AT THE START OF THIS YEAR. LUCKILY, I WAS STILL HALFWAY AWAKE AND CAUGHT MY ATTENTION VERY QUICKLY BECAUSE I DON’T KNOW WHAT WHAT HAD HAPPENED. IF NOT, IT’S JUST UNREAL. IT’S JUST IT WAS A NIGHTMARE. NOW HE AND THE OTHERS AFFECTED ARE MEETING WITH ADJUSTERS AND INSURANCE AGENTS, TRYING TO FIGURE OUT THE NEXT STEPS. IT’S A LOT OF DAMAGE. I, I HATE IT. I HATE IT FOR THE PEOPLE THAT HAVE TO GO THROUGH THIS. USUALLY WHEN SERVPRO COMES IN, IT’S NEVER A PLEASANT THING TO DEAL WITH MITIGATION COMPANIES JUST I ALWAYS TELL PEOPLE WE’RE DONE. WE HOPE THAT YOU DON’T HAVE TO SEE US AGAIN. AND SERVPRO OFFICIALS SAID THE PEOPLE THAT LIVE IN THESE HOMES WILL PROBABLY BE DISPLACED ANYWHERE FROM SIX MONTHS TO A YEAR AND FIRE OFFICIALS ARE STILL INVESTIGATING A CAUSE AT THIS TIME

The fire and police departments remained at the scene off of Peace Haven Road between Braehill Blvd and Ivystone Lane Tuesday morning. The fire happened in a townhouse in the 5300 block of Summit Heights Drive near South Peace Haven Road.

According to a news release, police officers were called to the scene to assist the fire department around 11 p.m.

Firefighters found the remains of Paul Rutledge, 76, in his townhouse, police said.

Everyone else in the building made it out before the fire department arrived, fire officials said.
