In just over a week, tens of thousands of fans will be filling the stands of North Wilkesboro Speedway for NASCAR's All-Star Race.
It's been nearly 30 years since a NASCAR race has been held at the track in Wilkesboro, and last-minute preparations are now underway as race day nears.
The track hosted an open house Wednesday, which was a bit of a test run for next week.
"We're so thankful for the support," North Wilkesboro Speedway's Scott Cooper said. "We've gotten so much support from state and local leaders and the community, and we are ready to have a party now."
It's been a long time coming, but North Wilkesboro Speedway is now ready to welcome tens of thousands of fans to the race track for NASCAR All-Star Race week and weekend.
"We are pacing for a sell-out crowd," Cooper said. "So if we sell out completely, we will have 28,000 to 30,000 people for the NASCAR All-Star Race, and we'll have even more people the rest of the week."
The speedway hosted an open house on Wednesday, which drew a large crowd. Now, those final preparations are underway for next week.
"We were absolutely thrilled to see so many fans turn out for an open house last night," Cooper said. "They were excited to see drivers and get autographs, but mainly it was about the venue itself. It was about being able to see this place for the first time after this restoration work has been taking place for so many months."
Racing will begin Tuesday night, with events every day leading up to the Cup Series All-Star Race on May 21.
"There are a lot of deliveries coming in, and we are still installing Wi-Fi in different places," Cooper said. "We are working on our parking plan, which is pretty much fully done now."
The speedway has been undergoing renovations for several months, preparing for NASCAR to return to its racing roots.
"This resurrection has happened," Cooper said. "It's now about the fun and getting ready to finish and come to that checkered flag and be ready to go next week."
It's all coming to fruition for everyone who has worked so hard, as North Wilkesboro Speedway hosts its first NASCAR race since 1996.
"It is incredibly rewarding for us to bring this track back to life," Cooper said. "We can't find a professional sports venue anymore that's completely closed with no hope of coming back, that has now come back to the same major league level for the same sport-- so this is historical what's taken place here."
Emails are now going out to fans who bought tickets to help them prepare.
People with digital tickets are encouraged to download those ahead of time.
