Thousands of families across the Triad have a huge burden lifted after a Winston-Salem church forgave nearly $3.3 million in medical debt. "I've been in the ministry for 40 years and I've never experienced anything like this where people are so interested in it." Rev. "You got to eat, and you got to take care of your children," she says. "You've got to do what you have to do just to live. And that is never going to rise to the top and it's always going to make you feel bad.""You have to see the vision of the need," said Greg Gentle, another congregation member. "It's not only the homeless man on the corner or the guy with the dog that's begging. It's the people that live next door, or it could be yourself."Helping a total of 3,355 families not just from Davidson County, but also families in Davie and Yadkin counties."Some of the poorer folks that we deal with get a medical bill of $1,000 or $3,000. It might as well be 10 million they just can't deal with it," Jackman said. "For them to get the letter that says that’s forgiven I think is such a relief."They don't plan to stop here. Jackman and members of Trinity Moravian church hope to continuously lift the burden of medical debt from families, one county at a time."We sort of see this medical debt project as something similar. That we're going to just keep doing, it'll grow and continue and we hope the medical system gets fixed someday but that’s beyond our pay grade," Jackman said. "But what we can do is what we're doing now, buy some of the debt and forgive it."The church is looking towards Surry and Stokes counties as places to help next.Donations were also a major contributing factor to this project. Jackman says their debt jubilee project was just another way to give back.

Congregation member Mary Bertstone, who serves as secretary for the church's board, says medical debt is something that can hang over your head forever.
