Health officials: Man dies from brain-eating amoeba after rinsing sinuses with tap water
WHAT’S ON THE TABLE FOR DISCUSSION? BUT WELCOME INTO A WET, WET THURSDAY MORNING ON DAVONTE MCKENITH. GOOD MORNING. I’M AUDREY BIESK. IT’S ALWAYS GREAT TO BE WITH YOU THIS MORNING. YOU PROBABLY HEARD THAT RAIN ON YOUR ROOFTOP TOO. PLEASE DRIVE SAFE AS YOU’RE HEADING OUT THE DOOR. BRIAN SLOCUM STANDING BY WITH THE REST OF OUR THURSDAY FORECAST. YEAH, A SOGGY START AND THE LEAST IMMEDIATE CONCERNS DO NOT INCLUDE THE THUNDERSTORMS THAT ROLLED THROUGH THE MAJORITY OF THOSE ARE GONE, BUT WE STILL HAVE A LOT OF WATER ON ROADWAYS. CHRISTINE HAS BEEN TALKING ALL MORNING LONG ABOUT TRAVEL CONDITIONS AND PONDING OF WATER. YOU COULD SEE A VERY WET CAMPUS AT NORTH CAROLINA AND STATE UNIVERSITY THIS MORNING. TEMPERATURES ARE IN THE LOWER FIFTIES AND RESIDUAL RAIN STILL FALLING, BUT THE HEAVIEST THUNDERSTORMS HAVE NOW ROLLED ON. IT’S MOSTLY KIND OF A LIGHT, STEADY RAIN AT THIS POINT WITH SOME MODERATE POCKETS THAT CREEP UP FROM TIME TO TIME. THIS WILL WIND DOWN THIS MORNING, THE AXIS OF THIS IS GOING TO SLIP SOUTH OF US, ALLOWING THOSE SHOWERS AND STORMS TO FADE A BIT MORE FOR TODAY. WE’LL START OUT WITH TEMPERATURES IN THE FIFTIES AND WILL STRUGGLE TO GET TO 70. BUT WE SHOULD GET THERE. THE THINNER THE CLOUDS GET IN THE AFTERNOON, THE BETTER SHOT WE HAVE OF DOING THAT. PLUS THE WESTERLY BREEZE AT 5 TO 15 TENDS TO BE A DRYING WIND AND A WARMING WIND FOR US. SO THAT SHOULD AT LEAST GET US IN THE VICINITY OF THAT RAIN. CHANCES DO FADE, BUT THEY DON’T LEAVE US ENTIRELY. WE COULD SEE AN ISOLATED SHOWER TODAY, ALTHOUGH IT’S NOT A BIG PART OF YOUR FORECAST MOVING FORWARD. STRONG STORMS YESTERDAY WILL SET UP SHOP AGAIN OVER THE SOUTHERN PLAINS, BUT SHIFT THEIR FOCUS FARTHER EAST FOR TOMORROW. THIS WILL BRING IN SHOWERS FIRST LATER TONIGHT AND FOR FRIDAY MORNING. BUT BY FRIDAY AFTERNOON, SOME STRONG SEVERE STORMS COMING OUT OF TENNESSEE AND KENTUCKY AND ALABAMA COULD HOLD TOGETHER LONG ENOUGH AND BRING SOME OF THE STRONG WINDS IN THE ATMOSPHERE DOWN TO THE GROUND AND CAUSE SOME WIND DAMAGE. AND EVEN ISOLATED TORNADOES CAN’T BE RULED OUT. RAIN CHANCES AGAIN PICK UP DURING THE AFTERNOON TOMORROW BEFORE FADING IN THE EVENING. WE’LL HAVE SOME DETAILS ON THAT WITH YOUR FULL FORECAST THAT JUST A FEW MINUTES FROM NOW. WE NOW WANT TO HEAD BACK TO THAT BREAKING NEWS HERE AT 602 THIS MORNING, TWO PEOPLE ARE NOW DEAD AND TWO OTHERS ARE HURT FOLLOWING A THREE CAR CRASH THERE IN WINSTON-SALEM. THAT WAS ALL CAUSED BY A WRONG WAY DRIVER. NOW, THIS HAPPENED JUST BEFORE MIDNIGHT ON I-40 NEAR STRATFORD ROAD. HIGHWAY PATROL TELLS US THAT A WOMAN DRIVING EAST IN THOSE WESTBOUND LANES CRASHED INTO A CAR, HEAD ON THAT THIRD VEHICLE, THEN REAR ENDED THE CAR THAT WAS HIT AT ONE. STATE TROOPERS SAY THE WOMAN AND THE DRIVER OF THE SECOND VEHICLE DIED. THE PERSON IN THE SECOND VEHICLE IS IN THE HOSPITAL CURRENTLY WITH SERIOUS INJURIES AND A PERSON IN THE THIRD CAR DID SUFFER A MINOR INJURY AS WELL. I-40 WAS CLOSED FOR ABOUT 3 HOURS OVERNIGHT. WHILE HOW WE PATROL WAS INVESTIGATING, BUT IT IS NOW BACK OPEN AT THIS TIME. STATE TROOPERS ARE NOW WORKING TO NOTIFY THE FAMILY OF THE MEMBERS, FAMILY MEMBERS OF THOSE KILLED. THEY ARE ALSO LOOKING INTO WHY THE WOMAN WAS DRIVING IN THE WRONG DIRECTION. AT 603,THE GREENSBORO PLANNING AND ZONING COMMISSION IS CONSIDERING DOZENS PUBLIC COMMENTS ABOUT SHORT TERM RENTAL REGULATION. THE PANEL GOT AN EARFUL FROM PEOPLE ON BOTH SIDES OF THE ISSUE DURING A HEARING. VICTORIA LUCAS JOINS US LIVE THIS MORNING WITH MORE ON WHAT COMES NEXT. VICTORIA. AUDREY AND DEVONTE. SO CITY LEADERS HEARD FROM VARIOUS GROUPS, YOU KNOW, PROPERTY AGENTS, REAL ESTATE AGENTS AND RESIDENTS. SOME OF THE REGULATIONS INCLUDE ALLOWING ONLY A MAXIMUM OF TWO ADULTS PER BEDROOM RENTAL OWNERS OBTAINING A ZONING PERMIT AND ALLOWING RESIDENTS TO STAY IN THEIR PROPERTY. NO MORE THAN 30 DAYS. SUPPORTERS EXPLAIN THAT SHORT TERM RENTING IS A VITAL COMPONENT TO A THRIVING CITY. THEY SAY TOURISTS COME TO VISIT THEIR CHILDREN IN SCHOOLS TO MAKE MEDICAL TREATMENT, AND MORE SO WHILE RESIDENTS WHO ARE OPPOSED SAY THE CITY IS LOOKING PAST THEIR NEEDS WHILE AIRBNBS MAY GENERATE ECONOMIC GAINS, ESPECIALLY IN CITIES THAT RELY HEAVILY ON TOURISM. GREENSBORO DOES NOT. MOST OF THE REVENUE GOES TO A DISPROPORTIONATELY SMALL POOL OF LANDLORDS. SHORT TERM RENTALS ARE A VITAL COMPONENT TO A THRIVING CITY AS AS HAS BEEN RECOUNTED EARLIER, IT GIVES PEOPLE THE OPPORTUNITY NOT TO STAY IN NAMELESS, FACELESS FRANCHISES AND ACTUALLY GET A FLAVOR FOR THE NEIGHBORHOOD. THE COMMISSION WILL MAKE ANOTHER RECOMMENDATION WHICH WILL BE HANDED TO A CITY COUNCIL FOR ANOTHER PUBLIC HEARING. AND THEN THERE WILL BE A FINAL VOTE FOR APPROVAL. LIVE IN GREENSBORO. I’M VICTORIA LUCAS, WXII 12 NEWS. VICTORIA, THANK YOU. TWO JUVENILES ARE IN CUSTODY THIS MORNING IN CONNECTION WITH A SHOOTING IN WINSTON SALEM THAT LEFT ANOTHER JUVENILE INJURED. POLICE SAY THE SHOOTING HAPPENED ON NORTH LIBERTY STREET NEAR HIGHWAY 52. OFFICERS FOUND THE JUVENILE VICTIM IN A CAR IN THE PARKING LOT OF A GAS STATION WITH A GUNSHOT WOUND TO THE CHEST. EMS RUSHED THE VICTIM TO THE HOSPITAL AND AT LAST CHECK, THE VICTIM IS IN CRITICAL CONDITION. NO CHARGES WILL BE FILED AFTER AN OFF DUTY GREENSBOROUGH POLICE OFFICER WAS SHOT JUST LAST MONTH. POLICE SAY THREE PEOPLE, INCLUDING THE OFFICER, WERE INVOLVED IN AN ALTERCATION. THIS WAS ON GOLDEN GATE DRIVE ON FEBRUARY 10TH. THE OFFICER, DUSTIN ELSTON, RESIGNED ON MONDAY. 12 INVESTIGATES OBTAINED SEARCH WARNS THE 911 CALLS RELATED TO THIS CASE. THE TWO DOCUMENTS REPORT DIFFERENT NARRATIVES OF EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED. YOU CAN READ THOSE TWO NARRATIV
