German manufacturer establishes new headquarters in Winston-Salem
PART OF IT COMING UP IN A BIT. ALL RIGHT, BRIAN, THANK YOU. LOOKING AHEAD THIS AFTERNOON, A MAJOR GERMAN MANUFACTURING COMPANY WILL BREAK GROUND ON ITS NEWEST NORTH AMERICAN HEADQUARTERS RIGHT HERE IN THE TRIAD. OUR JACKIE PASCALE JOINS US LIVE THIS MORNING WITH A PREVIEW. SO, JACQUI, HOW DID THEY DECIDE ON CHOOSING WINSTON-SALEM? WELL, SO THE NAME OF THIS COMPANY, FIRST OF ALL, ZIEL BIG. AND THEY SAID THAT THEY LOOKED ALL ACROSS THE COUNTRY FOR THESE POTENTIAL LOCATIONS FOR ITS NORTH AMERICAN HEADQUARTERS. I’M TALKING CALIFORNIA, THE MIDWEST. BUT ULTIMATELY, THEY DID DECIDE TO COME RIGHT HERE TO WINSTON SALEM, PUT THAT HEADQUARTERS HERE. DEFINITELY CONTRIBUTING FACTOR. ZELLERBACH DOES ALREADY HAVE A FACILITY IN GUILFORD COUNTY THAT’S WHERE IT PRODUCES THOSE VENTILATION SYSTEMS, GENERATORS AND OTHER EQUIPMENT. AND THOSE 200 POSITIONS THERE WILL BE MOVED TO THIS NEW SITE HERE IN FORSYTH COUNTY WHEN IT OPENS UP. PLUS, THE COMPANY SAYS IT WILL ADD 300 MORE JOBS WITH THE EXPANSION. IT IS HOPING TO RECRUIT A LOT OF THOSE FROM ITS EXISTING PARTNERSHIP WITH FORSYTH TECHNICAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE. OVERALL, THIS IS A BIG WIN FOR THE ECONOMY IN THE AREA. ACCORDING TO GREATER WINSTON-SALEM, INC, WHICH IS WHO HELPED ZELLERBACH COORDINATE THEIR EXPANSION HERE, THEIR GROWTH AND THEIR RECOMMITMENT TO OUR COMMUNITY REALLY HELPS US ACHIEVE OUR 2030 GOALS OF BEING A TOP MID-SIZED CITY IN THE SOUTHEAST FOR ECONOMIC GROWTH, BEING A MORE EQUITABLE COMMUNITY, AND ALSO BEING THE BEST PLACE TO RAISE A FAMILY. AND IN TOTAL, ZELLERBACH SAYS THAT IT IS INVESTING MORE THAN $100 MILLION INTO THIS NEW HEADQUARTERS FACILITY AND LOCATION. AND THAT IS GOING TO BE AT THE UNION CROSS INDUSTRIAL CENTER. THAT GROUNDBREAKING AT THAT LOCATION, 2 P.M. TODAY. AND THEN WHEN THEY WILL ACTUALLY BE WORKING IN THAT BUILDING, THEY SAY IT SHOULD BE AS SOON AS NEXT YEAR, 2024.

Ziehl-Abegg, a German manufacturer of ventilation systems, generators and other equipment, will break ground Wednesday on its new facility in Winston-Salem.The company said it is investing more than $100 million into the new location and creating hundreds of new jobs. Ziehl-Abegg employs 5,000 people at 16 production plants globally, including an existing facility in Guilford County with over 200 employees. Upon opening, those 200 positions will be moved to the new site in Forsyth County. At least 300 new jobs will be added as a result of the expansion, according to the company.The company is a partner employer of two local apprenticeship programs – the Learn and Earn Apprenticeship Program (LEAP) at Forsyth Technical Community College, and Guilford Apprenticeship Partners (GAP). It said it will continue recruiting from the programs as it looks to fill hundreds of positions in the new HQ. Greater Winston-Salem Inc. helped coordinate the company's expansion. According to Laura Lee, Senior Vice President of Economic Development, the new site would create an economic hub, fueling the growth of Winston-Salem as a whole."This announcement and the groundbreaking today is a huge opportunity for us to continue our legacy of manufacturing, but also be able to see the future of where our community can go," Lee said. "And we do have a lot of bright things that are happening right now."According to Greater Winston-Salem Inc., Ziehl-Abegg expects to move into the new site by 2024. The groundbreaking for the Union Cross Industrial Center is Wednesday at 2 p.m. at 4971 Millennium Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27107.
