LET’S GET RIGHT TO KARA PETERS, WHO JOINS US LIVE FROM POLICE HEADQUARTERS WITH HOW THE FINALISTS ANSWERED QUESTIONS TONIGHT FROM THE COMMUNITY. KARA, GOOD EVENING. GOOD EVENING, KENNY. THAT’S RIGHT. LIKE YOU MENTIONED, THE FOUR FINALISTS TONIGHT HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO ADDRESS HOW THEY WOULD HANDLE THINGS LIKE CRIME, YOUTH VIOLENCE, MENTAL HEALTH AND RETAINING OFFICERS IF THEY ARE CHOSEN TO BE THE CITY’S NEXT POLICE CHIEF. NOW, TONIGHT’S PUBLIC FORUM, WHICH LASTED ABOUT 2 HOURS, WAS HELD AT SALEM LAKE MARINA, WHERE DOZENS FILLED THE SEATS TO HEAR FIRSTHAND FROM THE FINALISTS. THE FINALISTS INCLUDE, JOSE, MANY GOMEZ, WILLIAM PENN, JUNIOR AND WILSON WEAVER. THE SECOND. ALL THREE CURRENTLY SERVE AS ASSISTANT CHIEFS WITH WINSTON-SALEM POLICE. NOW, ALSO IN THE RUNNING IS CURRENT DANVILLE, VIRGINIA POLICE CHIEF SCOTT BOOTH. ALL FOUR MEN ANSWERED QUESTIONS FROM A PANEL OF COMMUNITY LEADERS ON A RANGE OF TOPICS, MOST NOTABLY CRIME AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT. THE FINALISTS TOOK TIME RESPONDING ON HOW THEY WOULD USE THEIR EXPERIENCE AND STRATEGIES TO BEST SERVE THE CITY. TAKE A LISTEN. I WOULD BRING PROGRAMS IN WHERE I’M SURE THAT I WOULD BE IN CONTACT WITH OUR CITIZENS. I WOULD ORGANIZE A CHIEF ADVISORY BOARD FROM THE COMMUNITY. WE DON’T NEED TO WAIT EVERY YEAR FOR A COMMUNITY MEETING. MY OFFICE WILL RECEIVE COMMISSION BASED TRAINING SO THEY KNOW WHAT THE COMMUNITY EXPECTS OF THEM. WE COLLABORATE WITH THE COMMUNITY AND THE COMMUNITY REACHES OUT TO US. HOW DO WE ESTABLISH THAT? WE GOT TO GO BACK TO THE BASICS. AND AS A REMINDER, LAST WEEK, RESIDENTS HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO ASK QUESTIONS AND GIVE INPUT ON WHAT THEY WOULD LIKE TO SEE IN THEIR NEXT POLICE CHIEF. THE CITY PLANS TO ANNOUNCE THE NEXT LEADER SOMETIME BY THE END OF THE MONTH, WHICH IS NEXT WEEK. WE’RE LIVE TONIGHT IN WINSTO
