Local doctors describe importance, safety of colonoscopies
After a new European study began generating some confusion regarding colonoscopies, local doctors are emphasizing the importance and effectiveness of the cancer screening tool.
According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is the third-most common cancer diagnosed in the United States. Nearly 15 million colonoscopies are performed throughout the country each year, doctors said it's the main reason colorectal cancer death rates have been declining over the last several years.
"It reaffirms that this is a safe procedure, that it is the only real test for cancer that not only detects it but prevents it at the same time and that we can provide these services safely," Novant Health colorectal surgeon Dr. David Hiller said. "This is a fast rising cancer in our country and the best way to prevent it is getting a colonoscopy and following the screening guidelines, which now start colonoscopy at age 45."
The procedure lasts about 20 minutes and is used to detect colon polyps, colon cancer or any other abnormalities. Doctors recommend people undergo the procedure once they reach age 45.
