HEROES SERIES. FOR MORE THAN A DECADE, THE AMERICAN RED CROSS HAS BEEN RECOGNIZING LOCAL FIRST RESPONDERS, MILITARY MEMBERS AND GOOD SAMARITANS FOR THEIR IN THE TRIAD. AND THIS YEAR’S AWARDS CEREMONY IS TOMORROW AT THE MILLENNIUM CENTER IN WINSTON-SALEM. TODAY, WE HAVE A WOMAN WHO IS HELPING OUR NATION’S MILITARY FEEL LOVE AND APPRECIATION THAT FOR SOME OF THEM IS LONG OVERDUE. KENNY BECK INTRODUCES US TO HUBER. ONE OF THE BEST DAYS OF OUR LIVES. REALLY. A GREAT, WONDERFUL THING TO DO. WELL, THIS IS WHAT PETEY IN GREENSBORO LOOKS LIKE AT THE END OF A HONOR FLIGHT, AS ABOUT 100 VETERANS RETURN HOME FROM AN EXHILARATING DAY IN OUR NATION’S CAPITAL, VISITING MONUMENTS AND MEMORIALS DEDICATED TO THEIR SERVICE. AND THIS IS THE WOMAN IN CHARGE, ALLISON HUBER OF KERNERSVILLE. IT IS A FEEL GOOD STORY, FOR SURE. ALLISON’S INTEREST. THE PROGRAM DATES BACK TO 2018 WHEN SHE DROVE FROM THE TRIAD TO D.C. TO SURPRISE HER ARMY FATHER, JAY DEWITT, ON A SIMILAR FLIGHT OUT OF CINCINNATI. IT WAS QUITE THE DAY FOR ME. MY DAD REALLY NEVER TALKED ABOUT HIS MILITARY SERVICE. IN FACT, I HAD NO IDEA HE WAS A GREEN BERET. AFTER EXPERIENCE, I CAME BACK HOME WONDERING, WHY AREN’T WE DOING THIS HERE? WHAT? SHE DIDN’T REALIZE THE TIME WAS THAT THERE HAD BEEN A SIMILAR HERE. IT WAS KNOWN AS THE TRIAD FLIGHT OF HONOR. ITS MISSION WAS SPECIFIC TO WORLD WAR TWO VETS. THE FIRST ONE WAS IN 2009, BUT IT HAD BEEN YEARS SINCE THE MOST RECENT ONE. I STARTED PUTTING THE WORD OUT AND FOUND OUT SOME KEY FOLKS THAT WERE INVOLVED GOT SOME ADVICE FROM. THOSE THAT HAD BEEN IN AND LEADERSHIP ROLES IN THE PAST AND ON VETERANS DAY 20, 21, TEN YEARS. EXACTLY THE LAST TRIAD FLIGHT OF HONOR, ALLISON’S FIRST TRIAD HONOR FLIGHT TOOK OFF. KEEP IN MIND, I HAD NEVER BEEN ON THE ACTUAL FLIGHT, SO I HAD LOT TO LEARN. WE DID HAVE A MENTOR, BUT I JUST GLEANED AS MUCH AS I POSSIBLY COULD FROM THOSE AROUND ME. WHEN I WENT WITH MY DAD, IT WAS I WAS RIDING ALONG FOR, YOU KNOW, IT WAS GREAT. BEING IN CHARGE MEANS YOU’VE GOT A LOT OF WEIGHT ON YOUR SHOULDERS. IF THINGS GO WRONG, IF YOU’VE GOT SOMETHING THAT HAPPENS, IF YOU’VE GOT VETERANS THAT DROP AT THE LAST MINUTE BECAUSE OF HEALTH ISSUES. WE WERE ALSO DEALING WITH COVID. IT WAS STILL A HUGE SUCCESS. JUST LISTEN TO THE VETS WHO WENT. YOU’RE SO THANKFUL THAT LIVE LONG ENOUGH TO SEE THIS. I HAD A GREAT GREAT FIRST DAY. THERE WAS NEW PEOPLE DOING. WHAT’S IT LIKE COMING HOME TO THIS KIND OF A WELCOME. IT’S LIKE VICTORY OVER. OVER. WAITING TO SURPRISE ALLISON PTI AFTER THAT FIRST FLIGHT. HER DAD. IT HAD COME FULL CIRCLE. HE’S THE REASON WE HAD THIS FLIGHT TODAY. ALLISON SAYS THE GOAL IS TO DO TWO FLIGHTS A YEAR AND MAKE AS MANY PERSONAL CONNECTIONS AND MEMORIES AS SHE CAN WITH THESE AGING VETERANS. IT’S SO IMPACTFUL BECAUSE AS MANY OF THE VETERANS NEVER SAW A WELCOME HOME. I REMEMBER A VETERAN IN A WHEELCHAIR REACHING OUT HIS HAND AS THE TEARS WERE FLOWING. GETTING READY TO COME THROUGH THAT PARADE AS WE CALL IT. WE’VE HAD SOME OBITUARIES SAY IT WAS THE DAY OF THEIR LIFE. WE HAD ONE VETERAN WHO WAS BURIED IN HIS HONOR, FLIGHT JACKET AND HAT. AND THAT IS THE ULTIMATE THE ULTIMATE FOR US IN TERMS APPRECIATION. IT MAKES EVERY DAY THAT WE’RE WORKING TIRELESSLY BE WORTH IT. AS FOR BEING A HERO HERSELF, THE REAL HEROES ARE THE VETERANS. I WOULD NEVER CONSIDER A HERO. I THINK IT TAKES A TEAM AND AN ARMY, TOO, TO DO SOMETHING LIKE WE’RE DOING WITH TRIAD HONOR FLIGHT. BUT AGAIN, THE REAL FOCUS BE ON THE VETERANS AND WHAT THEY’VE DONE TO KEEP US FREE AND, PROTECT THIS COUNTRY. THAT WAS KENNY BECK REPORTING. WE, OF COURSE, ALL OF THOSE VETERANS SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY, THE NEXT

Salute to heroes: Kernersville woman restarts program honoring vets with flight to DC

Triad Honor flight takes veterans, for free, to monuments and memorials dedicated to their service

Alison Huber of Kernersville is one of this year's Salute to Heroes honorees for her work as executive director of Triad Honor Flight, an organization that arranges flights for local veterans to monuments and memorials in and around Washington D.C. dedicated to military service, free of charge. It all started in 2018 when Huber drove to D.C. to surprise her own military father, Jay Dewitt, who was on a similar flight out of Cincinnati."It was quite the day for me," she said. "My dad never really talked about his military service. In fact, I had no idea he was a Green Beret. After that experience, I came back home wondering- why aren't we doing this here?"What she didn't realize at the time was that there had been a similar program, known as the Triad Flight of Honor, which began in 2009 but hadn't gone on any new flights in years. She ended up reaching out to some of the people involved and was able to restart the program under its new name. On Veterans Day 2021, 10 years exactly after the last Triad Flight of Honor, the first Triad Honor Flight took off."Keep in mind I had never been on the actual flight so I had a lot to learn. We did have a mentor but I just gleaned as much as I possibly could from those around me," she said.It was a massive success, with veterans expressing their sincere gratitude to her and the guardians who accompanied them on the plane and throughout the whirlwind day at the monuments. Now, Huber's goal is to do two flights a year and make as many personal connections as she can."We had one veteran who was buried in his Honor Flight jacket and hat and that is the ultimate, the ultimate token for us in terms of appreciation. It makes every day that we're working tirelessly worth it," she said. The next Honor Flight is scheduled for Oct. 12 out of Greensboro's PTI airport. Each flight costs around $115,000.
