The Piedmont Triad International airport is, of course, a place for passengers to come and go, to and from their destinations, but it’s also home to much more.“We have a mission that’s twofold,” Baker said. “One is the traditional, it’s a place of transportation, a place where you go or your packages go to fly somewhere, but the other half of the mission is this economic development and this aerospace industry focus.”Boom Supersonic announced Wednesday it would build its manufacturing facility at PTI.The facility will be built on 65 acres, backing up to Interstate 73.“We are a very unique airport,” Baker said. “There are 8,600 people working here in aerospace industries. These are people working for Honda, HAECO, Fed-Ex and have been here for a long time. We already have a deep bench strength in the aerospace industry here on the airport and this announcement just makes it that much stronger.”The Piedmont Triad Partnership is a regional economic development nonprofit that helps support regional chambers of commerce entice companies to set up shop locally. President Michael Fox said the Triad’s deep history in manufacturing, as well as livability, was a strong pull in the efforts to bring Boom to the area.“It’s just a great place to live,” Fox said. “When CEOs are looking where to move their company, they want to move it where their employees want to live and where it will be easy to recruit people to come live.”Baker said PTI and Boom are finalizing lease agreements and working towards starting construction on its facilities.“They’re a great bunch of people and I really look forward to working with them,” Baker said.
