Homicide investigation underway after man found shot in Winston-Salem neighborhood
A homicide investigation is still unfolding after a 28-year-old man was found shot to death in a Winston-Salem neighborhood Monday morning, authorities say.
Winston-Salem police said they responded to 3600 Cornell Boulevard, near Clemmonsville Road, just before 7 a.m. after receiving a report of a shooting.
Officers said they arrived at the scene and found Jerry Watkins Jr., of Winston-Salem, lying in the yard behind 200 E. Clemmonsville Road with a gunshot wound.
Watkins, who lived in the neighborhood, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police are still trying to figure out if Watkins was shot and killed in the backyard behind 200 E. Clemmonsville Road or in an area nearby and ended up in the backyard.
Investigators found a red Chevrolet near the scene. The car is not registered to Watkins but they believe he may have been in the car at some point before his death.
Watkins’ cousin, Leon Taylor, said Watkins was like a brother to him and he can’t believe he is gone.
“I looked at him like a brother more than a cousin so when they called me and told me it hit me kind of hard. I didn’t know what to think. The only thing going through my mind was get there,” Taylor said. “As a person, I mean, he was a good person. A father first, family oriented, never bothers anybody, stuck to himself and was all about his kids.”
Taylor said his cousin did not deserve this and he just wants the person responsible to come forward.
“Whoever did it I would just ask them to turn themselves in. Or just give the family the vindication of wanting to know why. What happened as to the reason all this transpired. Like I said, it’s too much killing going on today. Everybody needs to stop the violence and come together. I mean you got families out here left without fathers and the kids aren’t going to ever know why,” Taylor said. “I would ask them why? What was his reason for wanting to kill my cousin, and over what? I mean guns in the wrong people’s hands today, it’s not the gun killing the person it’s the person killing the person. So, you can’t particularly say guns are the issue, it’s the person itself.”
The investigation is still in its early stage. There are no suspects at this time.
